Baron Elmo proudly presents a vinyl treasure sure to thrill devotees of black metal titan Varg Vikernes, aka BURZUM: an original pressing of the Daudi Baldrs LP, issued in 1997 by the Misanthropy label. This was the fifth album to appear under the Burzum rubric, and the first to explore a radically new direction for Vikernes, a direction forced upon him by the Norwegian legal system. Daudi Baldrs was cut by Varg while imprisoned for the murder of his former musical partner Euronymous, as well as for the burning of several Christian churches. As a prisoner, the only musical instruments Varg was allowed to have were synthesizer and tape recorder, both of which he used to redefine Burzum as a dark ambient project. This album was the first and best to be realized in the new style. Daudi Bardrs is a concept album based on the centuries-old Norse myth of the death of Baldr, the second son of Odin, who was done in through the chicanery of Loki, the trickster god. This killing would culminate in Ragnarok, the battle at world's end. The album is completely instrumental; the story only appears in the 8-page booklet that accompanies the LP. With Daudi Bardrs, Vikernes was attempting to create a new folk and classical music that explored his rather misanthropic (if not outright fascistic) notions of society and culture. His primitive but confident approach to melody and harmony is surprisingly beautiful as well as grim. It's a milestone in the annals of black metal, partaking of that music's dark spirit without a guitar or drum in sight. The record is packaged inside a full-size booklet with text (none in English, sorry to say) and beautiful paintings that tell the story. (Daudi Baldrs would later be repackaged in a standard jacket with one of the paintings as its front cover, the art that has been used for all subsequent editions. There was as well a version that included a set of six tarot cards; those did not appear in this earlier pressing.) Both the record and packaging are in gorgeous shape -- this LP comes in a re-sealable plastic sleeve, so we have no way to know for certain if it is new or used, but does not appear to have ever been played.
