Calexico, from Tucson, Arizona, plys the dangerous, rarely-tread territory between desrt noir, surf, and a shadowy, sometimes hazy, often darkly beckoning, blend of highly intelligent though very grounded Indie Rock that shares many sensibilities with related Arizona bands Giant Sand, The Friends of Dean Martinez, Richard Buckner and a few others that sprung from the fertile TUSCON Post-Punk indie scene.
Fusing the dusty sounds of the American Southwest with spaghetti western soundtracks, Mexican mariachi themes, vintage surf music, cool jazz, and a broad spectrum of Latin influences, Calexico are an eclectic and startlingly impressive band whose work is as distinctive as it is widely encompassing.
Comprised of two core members, Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the SPOKE LP. Although that record marked the band’s first official output, Joey and John had already been playing together as collaborating members of Arizona mainstays Giant Sand. A wide variety of tours, performances, including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals (!) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Richard Buckner), as well as their continuing relationship with Giant Sand, allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of support musicians and added instruments, and the band’s sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases.
THE BLACK LIGHT is their 2nd album - deeper and richer than their excellent debut "SPOKE", expanding upon that album's sun-baked, desolate themes - with a fuller, more developed and masterful cinematic, noir sense of texture and atmosphere, this is undoubtedly their most rewarding album - a minor masterpiece.
Between the standout instrumentals like "Vinegaroon", "Gypsy's Curse", "Fake Fur", "Chach", the genre bending "Minas De Cobre", and mysterious desert saga compositions like "Bloodflow" (great album finale), "Stray", "The Ride Pt. 2", "Missing" and the title track, there is a world waiting to be explored. Listening to The Black Light is being transported into another dimension, a world where scorpions surround you as you reach into the compelling mirage of deep, mysterious waters ghosted against the vast desert landscape. The focus that is brought into shape from the solid debut album Spoke is manifested here in fully flowered form, showcasing a wide range of instruments and timbres rarely seen in rock music.
The Black Light is an album that only a certain kind of band could make, living in its own world and building off of what came before. The most effective songs should be pointed out: the vast yearning of “The Black Light” leads the listener along down a dusty trail of charred intestate roads, whispered more than sung; “Missing” is one of the most moving ballads ever created, tenderly sang by Joey Burns; “Minas de Cobre” is perhaps one of the three or four best rock instrumentals ever created, using trumpets to accentuate pain and yearning; “Over Your Shoulder” is not far behind that one, remaining strong and using an acoustic guitar to express a melody usually meant for vocals; “Stray” and “Trigger” are fairly straightforward rock songs, yet still drenched the band’s ambience and mystery.
