Original US Blue Note MONO, Deep Grooved pressing on both sides, "47 West 63rd NYC" address on both side of label, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder with "RVG" and "Ear" mark stamped on dead wax.

“BN LP 1595 A and B” are etched on either side as is 9M.

Cover condition: A solid EX-- laminated cover

“Gakubushi” Folded Cover with two visible notches on the front (signs of a very early cover).

The laminate is fully intact, glossy with very little wear. Some damage on lower left along spine where there is a ¼ inch split. There is some minor pealing along the bottom and top spines. There is wear along the opening area and some dirt – DIRTY fingers -- on the bottom right of the front.

The back cover has a name stamp and a few dirt marks on the lower fold. There is a slight tear on the lower left.

Address on the back cover is "47 West 63rd St., New York 23".

Record condition: MINT- on both sides. Beaded edge, not flat.  

SIDE 1: EXC+. There was a label on the top of the center label that was removed but some mucilage remains. I’ve marked the grade down because of this. The VINYL ITSELF HAS NO sleeve scuffs and NO feelable hairlines, no skips, plays NM- with minimal noise.

SIDE 2 MINT. NO SCUFFS OR HAIRLINE SCRATCHES.

Somethin' Else is a jazz album by alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, his only album on the Blue Note label, recorded and released in 1958. Also, on the session is trumpeter Miles Davis in one of his handful of recording dates for Blue Note. Adderley was a member of Davis' group at the time this album was recorded. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected Somethin' Else as part of its suggested "Core Collection."[4]

Background

The album was recorded during Adderley's membership in the Miles Davis Sextet of 1958, and it also marks one of the few recordings Miles Davis made as a sideman after 1955. Indeed, Davis plays several of the first solos, composed the bluesy title track and, according to the liner notes, chose most of the material.[7] "Autumn Leaves" would remain in the Davis book, and "Love for Sale" would be recorded by the Davis Sextet a little over two months later.[8]

The twelve-bar blues "One for Daddy-O" was written by Adderley's brother Nat for Chicago radio DJ Holmes "Daddy-O" Daylie. At the end of that track, Davis can be heard addressing producer Alfred Lion, saying "is that what you wanted, Alfred?" Adderley and Davis would also be heard together on the 1958 Columbia Records release Milestones, as well as the 1959 landmark Kind of Blue, one of the most universally acclaimed jazz albums.

Reissue

On March 9, 1999, the album was released on compact disc as part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series, all titles in the series remastered by Van Gelder himself. It included a bonus track entitled "Bangoon" or, originally and incorrectly, "Alison's Uncle," composed by pianist Hank Jones. More hard bop in tone than the rest of the record, the original title refers to the fact that the session took place shortly after Nat Adderley's daughter Alison, had been born, hence making Cannonball "Alison's Uncle."
