Description
HERE ARE two very hot 1931 performances by two mighty orchestras on ONE record, one white, the other Black, both playing at the top of their form, in a virtual battle of the bands:
"CASA LOMA STOMP" by 'LOUIS' HARLEM STOMPERS,' a very deceptive pseudonym for THE CASA LOMA ORCHESTRA. Fake names were rarely were used on Columbia records; I wonder what they thought was being achieved with this moniker! At any rate, it's a stupendous, flag-waving performance of the Casa Loma signature number, with great solos by BOBBY JONES (trumpet), BILLY RAUCH (trombone) and PAT DAVIS (tenor sax) - among others. The real star here is the composition and arrangement itself, which builds relentlessly to a Hail-Mary climax. It prophetically features well-rehearsed antiphonal section work by the reeds and brass, anticipating the whole "Big Band" sound by about five years - an eternity in trendy popular music!
"BUSINESS IN F" by FLETCHER HENDERSON AND HIS CONNIE'S INN ORCHESTRA. Another hot hot hot performance, with COLEMAN HAWKINS (tenor sax) extensively featured; even he has to share the honors with ARCHIE BLEYER, who composed and arranged this piece. Another one that will leave you howling.
So we have a White band playing so "black" that they need a "Harlem" pseudonym, and a Black band playing a "white" complex arrangement. The styles were merging in '31, and this record documents the merger, from both sides of the tracks. Any way you cut it, this is a SIZZLING record!
This original 1931 black label "Viva-Tonal" Columbia 2615-D is in overall V++ condition. "Casa Loma Stomp" is closer to E-, "Business in F" is closer to V+.

*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
