CHARLIE PARKER Bird Blows UK SPOTLITE 3 LP BOX, Dial
Charlie Parker, The Bird Blows.
Original UK pressed Spotlite Records three LP box set with insert, in the Modern Jazz Collectors' Series.
Believed circa 1970s, this box set represents an attempt to reissue the original Dial sessions in the correct order, which had never really happened since Dial was sold to the Concert Hall label way back in the 1950s.
A nicely presented set, which retains much period detail. The outer box replicates the original generic Dial packaging, and the individual LP sleeves and labels also replicate the Dial releases.
LPs are Dial 901, Bird Blows The Blues, 904, Alternate Masters Vol.1 and 905, Alternate Masters Vol.2.
On the whole a fairly well preserved set. Vinyl is for the most part glossy and new looking, and spider trail marks around the centre spindle areas indicates just a very few plays. Surfaces are mostly free of marks. There are a couple of visible but superficial surface scuffs. Just one spot is slightly more problematic, where there are a couple of hairline scuffs which run just deep enough to sound. These are at the beginning of 904, and run across the first two tracks. The marks are not quite deep enough to cause noticeable and pronounced loud clicks, but the first track is slightly marred by some soft ticks and crackle. This only marginally creeps into the second track. Else a very clean sounding set.
Sleeves are all close to near mint, helped by being stored within a protective box.
Insert is EX. Clean and unmarked with just a fractional crease to top right corner.
Outer box a strong EX. Clean and without sunning or fading. No marks or stains. Barely any shelving wear, and no ugly rubbed tips or joints. The top right hand seam has been very neatly reinforced with clear sellotape, although no obvious damage is visible beneath.
