Cousin Emmy will go down in the annals of Country music as one of the most versatile of female pioneers. Her blend of musical talent (she played at least 15 instruments) and entertainment ability should have made her a candidate for the Country Music Hall of Fame, but time has a habit of forgetting those, especially the women, that forged a path through a predominantly male preserve. With her platinum-blond hair tied in highly colored ribbons, pale face, "Martha Raye" mouth in a broad grin, attired in an ill-fitting gingham dress, white stockings and ankle boots, Cousin Emmy hammed it up on stage with such tricks as playing her fiddle with the bow passing through her legs.

It was known that Cousin Emmy’s showmanship also played a big role in her outlandish stage acts; such as blowing up and playing a rubber glove, retrieving a harmonica from her cleavage, and passing a bow through her legs while playing the fiddle.

Cousin Emmy passed away in Oaks, California, in 1980. Her legend lives on as a pioneering gal who will be remembered for her accomplishments made during a time when it was difficult for women to make an impression in show business. She said it best herself when she proclaimed, “I’m the first hillbilly to own a Cadillac!”
