Rarity & Info: Moderately scarce as a first issue. Being honest, I have seen far fewer of these early 1972 repressings on the new deeply coloured Kinney label. Not only does the label differ, there is a major difference to the song ‘Wooden Ships’. The Atlantic red and maroon label first issues had this song censored with the line reference to purple berries being faded out so those two words cannot be heard, it makes the song sound somewhat odd. When first issued, censors would not allow any reference to drugs, whether the line was actually referred to them or not, and in this case it was somewhat debatable. But on this pressing, the purple berries reference is fully intact with no fading out whatsoever. This is seldom mentioned, but is a genuine fact. This copy also has a more robust cover, now printed by Gothic Print Finishers, the first ones were made with very soft and delicate card and are seldom seen without often heavy wear, especially to the edges. This one includes the same superb artwork, but the surface now has a very different style of texturing to all surfaces. This is truly beautiful and has a very intricate pattern that reminds of leather. This example in absolutely stunning condition. The gatefold lyric insert is also included, the record appears hardly played with few visual blemishes and very well pressed. So a lovely example for fans who want to hear ‘Wooden Ships’ unspoilt by fading of those purple berries on ‘Wooden Ships’, I am certain it was never issued uncensored until the Kinney version as per this.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A much loved work, often regarded in the past as inferior to the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young classic Déjà vu possibly because it’s less varied, and of course Young is not featured. But the quality of the songs and harmonies is simply breathtaking. Three youthful men singing songs about their relationships and changing partners. All songs are magnificent – Graham Nash’s ‘Lady of the Island’ (about Joni Mitchell), Stills’ opus-like ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ (about Judy Collins) and David Crosby singing of his sadly deceased sweetheart Christine on ‘Guinevere’. But for me the finest track is the sublime ‘Wooden Ships’ yes the same song covered by Jefferson Airplane on their masterwork Volunteers. Here it on this copy without the fading to the words ‘purple berries’ as the censorship is now lifted. This a lovely copy now with unique texturing to the less wear-prone card. The delicate album plays well with little unwanted and appears little used.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with unique patterned texturing on all surfaces and now made with different, more robust and certainly less wear-prone card. Printed and made in England by Gothic Print Finishers Ltd, London, includes the large format lyric insert and it’s white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A stunning front that comes very close to reminding of new. Ultra clean, fresh, devoid of creasing and rubbing, this is a work-of-art. Now with a superb pronounced complex texturing that gives a leather-look to the surfaces. This famous front cover will seldom be found looking better or with deeper colour than this.

Cover Back: Practically the same, maybe a gentle hint of a fade on the fold hinge, but even this is uncertain, if so, it is very light indeed. And who is that mysterious Young man seen through the window of the door?

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate as-seen, again with the new pronounced textured finish, nothing to fault at all.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with barely any hint of wear up to the right corner tip which has a tiny rub.

Bottom Edges: Gentle rubbing that shows little towards the right on the back edge, then pretty much as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still mainly sharp with any thickening light seen near the top, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Possibly very gently faded, but as stated above, this is not certain. That (maybe) apart, this is a superb spine with barely any trace of rubbing or compression. Robust and untilted with all text present and unworn, few first issue ones can ever state that.

Corners: Most of any tip rubbing is small and light on the right tips, the spine pair have hardly anything with no knocks to any. Excellent or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A great fresh example that does this classic cover nigh-on maximum justice, one to please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a basic plain solid white unlined inner that has hardly aged either. A little gentle crinkle, the paper with minimal hint of discolouration and no edge splits or repairs.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): printed one side only, the back is plain white, that has a light tone mark but little else to fault, that stops a near mint grading. The printed side is very clean and still fresh with hardly any hint of creasing. This one is quite smooth finished and folds with the text outside – these can vary. All edges crisp and unworn, clearly this has not been handled many times and has aged little at all with no writing or tears.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): an impressive visual with only very fine wispy surface traces seen under bright light. It retains fine shine and solidly pressed with no penetrating stylus scratches. Viewed in average room light barely anything even registers, this should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – a very brief trace heard on the difficult acoustic guitar and voice song ‘Lady of the Island’ which is always a very challenging gentle song. But even this mostly plays very impressively, and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, from experience, I have found few first issues play this well overall. Few available copies will outperform this still early 1972 early pressing significantly I feel sure. And nice to hear the unfaded and correct full version of ‘Wooden Ships’. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been superbly stored within a protective cover and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, but delicate record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish at best.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
