Camel 1st LP UK Camel First Pressing MCA MUPS 473 EX
1st Pressing of their 1973 debut album, simply entitled Camel. UK pressing MCA MUPS 473. Importantly this is with the blue / black record labels, rather than any later second pressing on purely black labels (also MUPS 473) or any later catalogue numbers such as MCF 2665 or MCL1601
The matrix no’s are:
Side 1: 7-LNMG-275-2L 1 B (Matrix stamper no.1)
Side 2: 7-LNMG-276-1L 1 B (Matrix stamper no.1)
Hardly ever comes up for sale in the form of this very first blue/ black label original pressing. Very first mother stampers of B and B in the Decca BUCKINGHAM sequence. One of the first ever produced!!
Condition: As my grading below suggests this record is in nice condition throughout with no major defects. There is just some minor wear as noted below.
Detailed grading:
Outer Sleeve: Overall the sleeve is in VG+ condition, being very close to excellent condition, many would in fact grade this as EX, but I prefer to grade on a strict basis. It is a very clean example with no staining or writing. There are just a few very small creases and light marks, the majority of which are on the front cover. The sleeve is however of good overall collectable quality, and a nice example.
Record: Overall the record is in EX condition. The record still retains its original deep gloss, these MCA pressings in my opinion were some of the highest quality records made during the 70’s, being very solid and having a general feeling of quality. On this example there are some very faint hairline marks across both sides, which are only visible when held to the strongest halogen light. Overall a really nice example of this LP.
Playback is excellent. I played this LP carefully on my Project desk with Ortofon cartridge and the results were stunning. It plays strong EX with minimal crackle and just the very occasional light surface click. The quality of the recording and instruments shines through. Wonderful.
Labels. EX+ , nice and clean.
The record also comes with its original sleeve, which is in EX- condition. It has a small 3cm split on the left seam edge along the seam itself. It is not poly-lined. The sleeve is marked 2-73 indicating manufacture in Feb 1973, the month in which this record was first released. Original!
Overall - I grade fairly but conservatively. This is a really nice original example of this amazingly rare 1st press of this LP with incredibly rare 1B 1B mother stampers.
