Description
Hello! This is an auction for a copy of Lie: The Love and Terror Cult by Charles Manson on Awareness, catalogue number A-2144. This is the extremely rare original yellow label pressing from 1970. What I've heard (although information behind what happened to all copies of this title is pretty lacking) is that apparently after Charles Manson got caught, he called in a favor from Phil Kaufman, and Phil Kaufman found himself in the unfortunate position of having to fulfill an old promise to help Charles Manson release an album. Nobody would touch it, so Phil had to pay $3,000 himself to have only 2,000 copies of this release pressed, of which supposedly only 300 sold at the time. Apparently he stored the remainder at his home, and had an ongoing issue of Manson Family Cult members breaking into his home to steal unsold copies of this very record. Several of those supposedly burned in a fire at Spahn Ranch. This particular copy has some splitting to the top of the cover, but otherwise looks shockingly clean, as if it was in shrink for quite awhile. The record is warped but also clean, and plays quite well. Considering this, this was either a copy that was left in the shrink for decades... or may actually be an unsold copy that was stolen from Phil Kaufman's house at a later date by a Manson Family Cult member. Either way, this is a surprisingly nice copy of this exceptionally rare title. If you can deal with some warping, this would be an excellent copy to go for if you are looking to add this title to your collection. Good luck!
