Chavela Vargas represents an entire gamut of different shades in the realm of singing. She is a woman that, gifted with a strong personality, knows pertectly well the exceptional flexibility that characterizes her voice, and the manner in which to put to good use the shades and tonalities with such ease.

No sooner does she offer us one of her interpretations when she pours out all her sentiment, uhether it be a bolero or a sentimental ranchero.

Her interpretations always carry a personal style all her own, that, even though repeated on various occasions, appear differently, due to her very natural delivery which relies on the mood she is in at time. Taking the latter into consideration, the listener will be able to appreciate the difficulties that had to be surmounted in achieving this exceptional recording of this incomparable songstress, whose adequate and precise interpretation had to be captured when she felt she was in the right mood.

Chavela Vargas' life in show business is full of so many picturesque anecdotes that many a backcover —would not be sufficient to relate. However, two quaint ones are told:

She relates that once before appearing before a South American audience, she was advised to pertorm in a daring strapless evening gown, considering the elegant local in which she was going to perform. The result could not have been worse, the performance was an absolute failure. It so happens that the sentimental songstress is so identified with her netive Mexican dresses, that without them, Chavela is not at her best. Another tells when she performed at the famous "Blue Angel" in New York, the sophisticated night spot where such greats as Harry Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, Diana Shore and others have encounted fabulous trumphs. Before an audience totally ignorant of the Spanish language, she was heard in absolute silence, and resounding applauded at the end of the show.

When someone called her "The existentialist of Mexican song", she retorted by saying, "I am not an existentialist in any sense of the word. I think that when one gives genuine art, it is not possible to think about existentialism"

Others have said, regarding her stirring personality, "She's a creator from the core, because what she says remains inside of every person that listens to her, leaving a vestige of emotional restlessness. Chavela is one of the few people that faces up to things in the artistic, as well as in the human course of events". As far as she is concerned, she sums up her marvelous artistic and human simplicity, and sincerity, when she expresses,

"How difficult is it be an artist and a human being, when the taste of success excites us to detour from the precious normality of a simple life"

Chavela Vargas, boasting of her wholesomeness and femininity, delivers with sentiment such lovely melodies a "Flor de Azhalea" (Flower of Azhalea), "Ojos tristes" (Sad Eyes), "Tata Dios" (God the Father), and other wonderful classical Mexican compositions that will thrill you on this LP.

Orfeon Videovox, proudly gives you this second volume of the terrific artistic expressions of the scintillating señorita of personality Chavela Vargas.
