Description
In 1983, King Records (Japan) embarked on a special release of fifteen of the most in-demand mono and stereo Blue Note records – the Masterpiece Series - using the highest production standards available. These “facsimile” reissues had no indication of their Japanese origins, omitting the JASRAC licensing logo or any mention of King Records throughout the series. The record labels replicated those on the original releases. The covers included a replica of an illustrated Blue Note inner sleeve as well as a gummed sheet of “STEREO” stickers that were affixed to recordings originally issued prior to the printing of stereo covers. The series consisted of Clifford Brown/1526, Paul Chambers/1569, John Coltrane/1577, Sonny Rollins/1581, Sonny Clark/1579, Sonny Clark 1588, Lee Morgan/1590, Art Blakey/4003, Cannonball Adderley/1595, Bud Powell/4009, Horace Silver/84017, Kenny Burrell/84123, Dexter Gordon/84146, Eric Dolphy/84163, and Herbie Hancock/84195. In addition, a bonus record – the previously unissued “Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia, Volume 3” – is included; this record, with a catalogue number of “????”, was available only to those buyers of the series who redeemed coupons on the back of the obi. All records and covers are as-new, except for Eric Dolphy/84163, which has a 1 ¾” split at the center of the bottom seam and a missing obi coupon. 1526, 1577, 1579, 1588, 1590, 84017, 84123, 84146, and 84195 have no obi.
