Around 1967, Del Shannon met the Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham. Andrew took Del into London's Olympic Studios to record the LP "Home And Away". Aided by people such as John Paul Jones, Billy Nichols and others, an entire album was recorded. However, for reasons unknown to us mortals, Liberty Records decided to shelve the LP and, instead, had Del Shannon record another album for the "psychedelic times" called "The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover". The LP was released in 1968 and included harpsichords, music boxes, backwards string playing and multi-layered tapes a la Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band. It is a lost, minor-key, pop-psych masterpiece that deserves to be discovered by the masses, and a must for any 60's psychedelic collector. It ranks as my favorite “soft-psych” LPs. Songs like "Colour Flashing Hair", "Magical Musical Box", & "New Orleans (Mardi Gras) blow away many who hear it for the first time and go "is this the same Del Shannon of 'Runaway' fame!?!"

This is by far the single rarest Del Shannon album (with a possible exception of the stereo versions of his first two albums on Big Top label). And for good reason: no one who has it wants to part with it. We are not parting with it, either: this is one of the two copies we have. Needless to say, we are keeping the other one…grab this beauty before we change our mind.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++)  -- despite all the listed flaws...

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape) along the opening side and top seam

-        Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-        Top seam: between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters.

-        Bottom seam: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-        Spine: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker.  (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
