Description

Well, we have something special here. The back cover has been autographed by Duke Ellington and Cootie Williams. I spent an hour on the internet looking at other signatures by these two gentlemen and these do indeed appear to match other known examples. Ellington is often considered the greatest Jazz Composer and Band Leader of all time. Cootie, one of the greatest Jazz trumpeters, started his career working in the Young Family Band with Lester Young in the 1920's. Spent time with Chick Web and Flectcher Henderson, before joining Duke's Band at the Cotton Club in 1929, taking the chair of Bubber Miley. Cootie was also in high demand as a sideman on many Jazz Combo recording sessions of the 1930's. In 1940 he left Duke for a brief stint with Benny Goodman before becoming the leader of his own band, where he employed up and coming talent such as Charlie Parker, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Bud Powell. In 1962 he rejoined Ellington and stayed with the orchestra until 1974. Presumably the original owner of this record took it to an Ellington concert between 1962-1974 and was able to have it signed, or maybe bought the album new at the concert.
The record "The Music of Duke Ellington" is part of the Columbia "Great Jazz Composers Series" and was first released in 1954 and is a compilation of Ellington's greatest hits recorded in the 1930's and 40's. The tracks were transferred to tape from original metal masters or shellac discs, so there is some inherent surface noise from the source material, but over all the music is beautifully rendered and quite timeless in it's historic importance. The Columbia 6-eye label dates this release from circa 1958-1962, but oddly the discogs website, does not have this edition, it shows the earlier 1954 & 55 releases and a 1965 2-eye release, but does not have this 6-eye copy listed.
