Description
Duke Ellington on Columbia 951 – signed by band
This is the original deep-groove pressing of Duke Ellington “A Drum Is A Woman” on the six-eye labels of Columbia CL 951. Other than two inaudible handling marks on Side 2, the playing surface is in excellent condition, with a nice luster; perhaps played once or twice. The frame cover shows light shelf wear; signed with a fountain pen on the back by Sam Goodyard, Quentin Jackson, Willie Cook, Jimmy Woode, Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges, Cat Anderson, Harry Carney, Russell Procope, Harold Baker, John Sanders, and Ozie Bailey, and on the front “To Mack, Good luck, Duke Ellington” on the girl’s butt. Directly above Cat Anderson’s signature is a very light “To Mack” in pencil, where Duke apparently started his inscription, but thought the better of it and decided to use the cover girl as a canvas for his pen. Most likely, the signatures were obtained in the late 1950s, when Harold Baker and Ozzie Bailey were in the band.
