Description

Stereo copies of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with blue/black Columbia labels are quite rare. The majority of copies were mono. But this is one of the very, very first ever, with the first matrix numbers, first mothers and first stampers on both sides, as follows:

Side one:  YAX 3419-1                                 1                       G

Side two:  YAX 3420-1                                 1                       G

But, not only is this the earliest example you can find, it is also has outstanding audio that would be hard to equal. I think it would be very difficult to find another stereo 1st pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with audio like this, but to find one with 1G/1G stampers is probably impossible.

Vinyl: The vinyl has retained its sheen with some surface marks here and there, but there is absolutely nothing with any audible impact. I've listened to the whole album and the audio is superb with nothing to report. For the sake of completeness I would mention that there is some very quiet background noise in the run-ins/outs or some of the fades, silent grooves and intros, but generally even the silent grooves play perfectly. This can be a really difficult album to find as a first pressing with superb audio, but this is the best I've heard. I think it would be very unlikely that you could find one that sounds better and I would play-grade it as a VERY SAFE Near Mint (NM). Please note that a visual grading would be lower.

Labels: The KT tax code is on side one. The side one label has a slightly mottled area, but there are only light spindle trails on either side, suggesting that the record wasn’t played all that much.

Cover: Superb example of this original cover with no 'File under POPULAR: Pop Groups' text printed on the top flipback. No splits, tears, writing, stickers or significant issues, just a few creases to the laminated front, but there is nothing major anywhere. It is very hard to find original stereo covers (i.e. without the text on the top flipback) in this condition.

Inner sleeve: Original EMI inner sleeve, has no splits or tears, just some slight age-related discolouration. A very nice example.

Detracting features not covered above:  None. I think it would be very hard to find a better one.

All photographs are of the actual item for sale. Please ask any questions before you bid or buy.
