This shellac record (also called an “acetate”) is an extremely rare 12-inch 78 RPM test pressing from the 1943 musical film Stormy Weather.
This rare test pressing features two songs. One is "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby," performed by the legendary Lena Horne accompanied by an ensemble and orchestra. While Lena Horne is famously associated with the film's title track, "Stormy Weather," she also performed this classic jazz standard in the movie alongside tap-dancing icon Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
The second song features Lena Horne performing "Good For Nothin' Joe" with an orchestra.
The label on one side reads:
20th Century Fox (logo)
Beverly Hills, California
TCF 205 1A
Title:”I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE, BABY”
Artist: Lena Horne, Ensemble & Orch.
Picture: “STORMY WEATHER”
The label on the opposite side reads:
20th Century Fox (logo)
Beverly Hills, California
TCF 192
Title:”GOOD FOR NOTHIN’ JOE”
Artist: Lena Horne vocal & Orch.
Picture: “STORMY WEATHER”
Test Pressings were created to be played by productions on set during rehearsals to help with blocking, choreography, etc, and to be used as “playback” during actual filming.
This record was intended for internal studio use and was never meant to be released commercially to the general public. That means it’s highly likely that that these two songs represent previously unheard performances by Lena Horne! This is an incredibly rare and historically significant piece of music and Hollywood history.
It’s also important to note that Lena Horne's participation in Stormy Weather was a landmark moment in Hollywood history, as it was one of the few big-budget musicals of the era to feature an entirely Black cast.
Condition is Very Good. No readily discernible scratches or warping.
