Hi, great smooth Calypso soul here by EDRIC CONNOR & the Southlanders. Featuring his Calypso LP on Westminster Records (WN-18096). Also seen on cover with 'X' added - XWN 18096. Also related to ARGO / Chess record labels.
Rare Original vintage CALYPSO LP from 1955.
After I looked up Edric not Cedric as I thought at first, I also found he had an extremely scarce release related to MANCHESTER UNITED EPHEMERA. It was EDRIC CONNOR with Ken Jones & his Music on ORIOLE RECORDS 1362 from 1957. Released before the Munich Air Disaster, it is now impossible to find, especially after the disaster it faded quickly from view and is now almost forgotten. Featured MANCHESTER UNITED CALYPSO c/w YORUMBA HIGHLIFE.
Condition of record: VG+ to NM Has nice gloss.
Sounds excellent with light background noise on intros & slight pops on quieter song parts heard at loud volumes on my Panasonic home system. Sounds much better and more unnoticeable on my SL1200s with Ortofon dj needles.Condition of label: VG+ to NM - Looks very good, clean on front and back, with only slight wear. Colors still vibrant.
Condition of Cover: VG to VG + - Colors still very nice on front. Slight corner wear on edges. Small 1/4 split on bottom right. Small writing upper left (front). Both and front cover has minimal wear, more noticeable on white back cover. Spine still legible, has slight along it. All and all, very nice cover for the art work on front is golden and still shines great for such an old LP.

Trinidadian Edric Connor recorded several albums of folk music from the Caribbean. In 1952 (about the same time that the first mento 78s were released), Connor released the LP, Edric Connor and the Caribbeans: Songs from Jamaica on the Argo label. This is a seminal release in the history of recorded Jamaican music, as it contains the first recorded versions of a number of songs that would later appear in mento, ska, reggae and even American folk and pop. It's a safe bet that Harry Belafonte had a copy of this LP.
These are Jamaican folk music recordings, not mento. Connor's powerful voice is accompanied only by sparse piano and backing vocals. The liner notes by Hugh Paget make an earnest attempt to put these songs into the perspective of all Caribbean music. He finds (by 1952), that Trinidadian calypso is already commercialized by the tourist trade. Paget also attempts to explain some of the songs' meanings and defines some of the patios heard in the lyrics. The liner notes also reveal that Louise Bennett was involved in the LPs repertoire.
