EDRIC CONNOR

(2 August 1913–13 October 1968)

Edric Connor was a pioneering calypso singer, folklorist and actor who was born in Mayaro, Trinidad, in 1913. He migrated in 1944 to the United Kingdom, where he chiefly lived and worked until his death from a stroke in London, England, at the age of 55.

In 1951 Connor was responsible for bringing the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra – TASPO - to the Festrival of Britain.  In 1956, he recorded the first Manchester United Football Club song, The Manchester United Calypso. That same year, he and his wife Pearl (1924–2005) set up the Edric Connor Agency, representing black actors, dancers, writers and musicians, which later, in the 1970s, she ran under the name of the Afro-Asian-Caribbean Agency. In 1963 they set up the Negro Theatre Workshop, one of the UK's first black theatre groups.  

In 1952, with his band "Edric Connor and the Caribbeans" he recorded the album Songs from Jamaica. This included the song "Day Dah Light", which portrayed the hard life of Caribbean field workers. The song was later recorded by Jamaican folk singer Louise Bennettin 1954, and was later rewritten by Irving Burgie and William Attaway in 1955. The version performed by legendary singer Harry Beladìfonte became popularly known as Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) reaching number five on the Billboard charts in 1957.

The London based, pioneer calypso singer EDRIC CONNOR,  publishes in 1952 the first ever recorded caribbean field work song,  DAY DAH LIGHT,  which will later become a worldwide hit by HARRY BELAFONTE as... Banana Boat song

Soft cardboard jacket in EX condition.

The front cover is clean, with NO creases, corners with NO wear, except for a  small bump and crease on bottom right corner. A light yellowing with a few rusty little spots are visible on the back side.

Vinyl :   EX+  

The lustre vinyl looks played with extreme care, with just a few minimal rubs on both sides visible only under a strong  lamp, original clear and beautiful sound.

Catalogue/Label :

LP ARGO RG 33 (UK), original English early mono pressing from 1952.

Original white ARGO labels with blue lettering in excellent condition, with no wear at all, very rare for a 60 years old LP !. Apparently, not any mark is visible around the spindle hole. Please look at my label scans.

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. 

        NM (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX  (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-  Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues. 

 G  Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
