EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER Brain Salad Surgery (Manticore MC 66669) Signed by HR Giger! EX+
Original US first pressing of Emerson, Lake & Palmer`s classic album "Brain Salad Surgery" on Manticore Records (November 1973). Handsigned (at bottom right) by artist HR Giger (1940-2014).
This specific copy was signed by cover artist Hans Ruedi (HR) Giger himself. The autograph is fully guaranteed to be authentic, as the previous Swiss owner was a personal acquaintance of HR Giger.
For comparison purposes, a further example of HR Giger`s signature has been added as the tenth (and last) photo in Brain Salad Surgery`s photo gallery. This autograph was sourced from the Wikimedia Commons website.
Official authentication of HR Giger`s autograph can be arranged via local art dealership in Zürich, Switzerland; this will occur at the auction winner`s discretion only.
The album cover features distinctive (HR) Giger monochromatic biomechanical artwork, integrating an industrial mechanism with a human skull and the ELP logo, also created by Giger. The lower part of the skull is covered by a circular "screen" showing the mouth and lower face in its flesh-covered state. The front cover is split in half down the centre.
When opened, the cover is vaguely reminiscent of a triune Christian icon. It reveals a spray-painting of a woman`s face, modelled after Giger's then-partner Li Tobler, with "alien" hair and multiple scars. An infinity symbol is visible, as well as scarring from what appears to be a frontal lobotomy. The face itself has an almost death-mask-like quality, which is strangely disquieting in view of the model`s suicide only two years later (May 1975).
The two images of the woman are very similar, but the overlay image (in the circle) shows the top of a phallus below her chin, arising from the ELP column below. The circular overlay originally contained the complete phallus, but this was removed at the insistence of the record company.
The paintings themselves are titled "Work No. 217 ELP I" and "Work No. 218 ELP II". The original acrylic-on-paper paintings were lost (or stolen) after a HR Giger exhibition at the National Technical Museum in Prague (August 2005). Giger himself states that Emerson, Lake & Palmer never paid the bill for his artwork.
