Description
EMI ALP 1257/1261 -- Wagner, Die Walkure. Wilhelm Furtwangler conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, with Martha Modl, Leonie Rysanek, Ferdinand Frantz, Ludwig Suthaus, Margarete Klose, and Gottlieb Frick. One of the finest performances of this opera on rare original red & gold ER1 labels. These records are from the collection of music critic Jack Diether, writer for High Fidelity, Chord and Discord, Musical America, American Record Guide, and many other publications. All proceeds from this auction will shared with his widow. They are in an album which appears to have been put together by Mr. Diether; the original box is not included. If you require international shipping and do not want the album, I can pack the records without it and save roughly 1.5 pounds off the listed shipping weight. Also included are several items which Mr. Diether stored with this album: a review of this recording clipped from the September 1955 issue of Gramophone, a copy of "Opera News" from February 8, 1954 featuring several articles on Die Walkure, and a copy of the libretto for Die Walkure from the 1930-1931 season of the German Grand Opera Company.

Note that the first side of each record has a small blue sticker with "From the record collection of Jack Diether" pasted onto the center of the label (see photo); the second side of each record does NOT have such a sticker. Condition of the records is as follows. As a test, I cleaned Sides 1 and 2 with Disc Doctor brushes and fluids; this led to a noticeable reduction in surface noise, and similar improvements could probably made by cleaning the remaining discs.
Side 1 (after cleaning) plays Ex, due to some occasional light surface noise and some quiet tics and pops during the first half (second half plays NM-) Visually Ex.
Side 2 (after cleaning) plays NM-, visually NM-
Side 3 plays NM- with some quiet tics and pops, especially during the first two minutes. Visually Ex, with a small light scratch which doesn't sound
Side 4 plays Ex, with occasional quiet tics and pops. Visually Ex, with a light scuff or two.
Side 5 plays NM-, with some quiet tics and pops. Visually NM.
Side 6 plays Ex, with occasional quiet tics and pops. Visually NM.
Side 7 plays Ex-, with quiet tics and pops. Visually, VG+ with two light but long scratches which generally do not sound.
Side 8 plays Ex, with occasional quiet tics and pops. Visually NM-.
Side 9 plays Ex, with occasional quiet tics and pops. Visually Ex, with a few very light scuffs that don't sound.
Side 10 plays Ex, with occasional quiet tics and pops, visually NM-

GRADING STANDARDS:
Mint - Never played prior to grading with perfect dead quiet surfaces. Sealed records are not necessarily mint, since they may have been manufactured with pressing defects or poor-quality vinyl formulations. I almost never give this grade.
Near Mint NM -- Record has been previously played, but sounds as new. A tiny bit of surface noise and/or a few light tics or pops are acceptable if these were likely present in the record when it was originally manufactured. No scuffs, scratches, or other visual marks.
Excellent EX -- Record shows some signs of wear, with light surface noise and/or some tics and pops and/or a scratch which sounds very briefly and quietly. These flaws are sufficiently minor that the do not distract from the music. Visually, there may be some light scuffing and/or one or two short light scratches
Very Good+ VG+ -- Record shows signs of wear, with light surface noise and/or some tics and pops and/or a scratch which sounds briefly. These flaws are sufficient to occasionally distract from the music, but note that the record is completely playable and will still provide a great deal of listening pleasure. Visually, there may be some scuffing and a few light scratches.
