Description
EMI ALP 1030/1035 -- Wagner, Tristan und Isolde. Wilhelm Furtwangler conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra, with Kirsten Flagstad, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ludwig Straus, and Blanche Thebom. One of the finest performances of this opera on rare original red & gold ER1 labels. These records are from the collection of music critic Jack Diether, writer for High Fidelity, Chord and Discord, Musical America, American Record Guide, and many other publications. All proceeds from this auction will shared with his widow. They are in an album which appears to have been put together by Mr. Diether; the original box is not included. If you require international shipping and do not want the album, I can pack the records without it and save roughly 1.5 pounds off the listed shipping weight.

Condition of the records is as follows. As a test, I cleaned one record with Disc Doctor brushes and fluids; this led to a noticeable reduction in surface noise, and similar improvements could probably made by cleaning the remaining discs.
Side 1 plays VG+ with some surface noise, particularly in first 2 ½ minutes, and occasional tics and pops. Visually VG+, with several light scratches which sound intermittently and quietly. Despite these flaws, this side is perfectly playable and pleasurable to listen to.
Side 2 plays Ex, due to tics and pops during the opening 3 minutes (the rest of the side plays NM-). Visually Ex.
Side 3 plays Ex, with tics and pops during opening 4 minutes, then some occasional light surface noise. Visually Ex, with a light scuff and a few light marks.
Side 4 plays Ex, with some light surface noise and occasional tics and pops. Visually, VG+ with some light scratches and scuffs which do not sound.
Side 5 plays Ex with some tics and pops. Visually Ex
Side 6 plays Ex-, with some surface noise (particularly during opening minutes) and occasional tics and pops. Visually Ex.
Side 7 plays Ex with some occasional tics and pops. Visually Ex
Side 8 plays Ex- with quiet tics and pops. Visually Ex-, with scuffs and some light marks.
Side 9 plays Ex- with quiet tics and pops. Visually Ex.
Side 10 plays Ex- with quiet tics and pops. Visually Ex.
Side 11 plays VG+ due to some loud tics and pops during the opening 3 minutes, otherwise Ex-. Visually Ex-
Side 12 plays VG+ due to a some prominent tics and pops and some surface noise. Visually Ex.
All Records play-graded on a Townshend Rock Mk III turntable with OL-modified Rega arm and Benz M2 cartridge. I work very hard to make sure my grading is accurate. GRADING STANDARDS:
Mint - Never played prior to grading with perfect dead quiet surfaces. Sealed records are not necessarily mint, since they may have been manufactured with pressing defects or poor-quality vinyl formulations. I almost never give this grade.
Near Mint NM -- Record has been previously played, but sounds as new. A tiny bit of surface noise and/or a few light tics or pops are acceptable if these were likely present in the record when it was originally manufactured. No scuffs, scratches, or other visual marks.
Excellent EX -- Record shows some signs of wear, with light surface noise and/or some tics and pops and/or a scratch which sounds very briefly and quietly. These flaws are sufficiently minor that the do not distract from the music. Visually, there may be some light scuffing and/or one or two short light scratches
Very Good+ VG+ -- Record shows signs of wear, with light surface noise and/or some tics and pops and/or a scratch which sounds briefly. These flaws are sufficient to occasionally distract from the music, but note that the record is completely playable and will still provide a great deal of listening pleasure. Visually, there may be some scuffing and a few light scratches.
