This is a Still Factory Sealed, Numbered (116/500), Limited Edition, German-made, Audiophile exemplar from Modern Silence Productions reissuing on heavy-gauge vinyl one of the greatest mid-century modernist recording projects ever undertaken. In 1958 and 1960, under the direct guidance of the composer Varese and a fascinated, deeply sympathetic Igor Stravinsky, the pioneering U.S. conductor Robert Craft engaged the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and distinguished soloists to produce a two-volume survey of Varese's profoundly innovative and widely influential symphonic masterworks, often employing enormous orchestral forces to conjure modernist soundscapes of ravishing power, beauty, and wonderment. Varese (1883-1965) experimented as early as the 1920s-30s with electronic musics, taped musical components integrated with live performances, and percussion feats on novel, hand-made instruments long, long before other composers got around to being so bad-ass and audaciously inventive. The revered Craft Varese recordings were first issued on Columbia Stereo albums in 1962. Awesome, insightful, constantly amazing orchestral sonorities illuminate these performances regarded at the time as a long overdue acknowledgement of Varese's musically innovative genius. Fellow maverick creators who took direct inspiration from these pioneering Craft recordings of Varese masterworks include Pierre Boulez, John Cage, George Crumb, Olivier Messiaen, Iannis Xenakis, Frank Zappa (who became obsessed with Varese's re-engineering of modern musical sound, instrumental inventions, and dedicated his own last recordings to re-takes of key Varese pieces), and the genius composers and syncopators animating the American Rock band Chicago.
