Impossible-to-find unopened original of this great collection of seminal early electronic/musique concrete works made at the WDR Cologne, Studio di Fonologia Milan, and INA-GRM out of tape-manipulated found sounds and purely electronic tones. Most of the tracks are highly rhythmic, intricately dense, and gorgeously noisy studies produced during the earliest period of experimentation in the new electronic medium. Kagel's piece involves "a continuity... of timbre-surfaces which are passed on from one sound object to the next." The Ligeti composition explores "the ground which separates music and speech to create a sort of language without meaning by purely musical means." Henry's work was made to accompany paintings by Jean Degottex. Pousseur's Scambi is derived entirely from processed and filtered white noise. This album was compiled by Pierre Henry and issued with beautiful psychedelic packaging by Limelight, with notes that attempt to frame it all for the American psych-hippie audience: "Can you imagine the sound of a raindrop suddenly lengthened, expanded, magnified into music? Electronic machines are the new instruments. In the hands of gifted composers, they can turn everyday sounds into space age symphonies. It is a totally new musical form. Tomorrow music..."
artist info from album notes:
Eimert founded with Robert Beyer the WDR Koln early electronic music studio which stressed the purity of synthesized tones; he worked closely with the composers who came to his studio including Gottfried Michel Koenig, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Konrad Boehmer, Herbert Brun, Karel Goeyvaerts, Bengt Hambraeus, and Franco Evangelisti. Henry studied under Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen, and together with Pierre Schaeffer founded the world's first tape music studio; the INA-GRM studios was a center of study for electroacoustic pioneers like Francois Bayle, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Jean-Claude Risset, Edgar Varese, and Iannis Xenakis. Kagel is a composer of experimental music and music-theater, conductor, and filmmaker who studied literature under Jorge Luis Borges; he was influenced by Stockhausen, John Cage, and Harry Partch. Ligeti is a Hungarian composer who studied under Ferenc Farkas and Sandor Veress and explored methods of micropolyphony/tone-clustering as well as early electronic music; he was influenced by Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok. Boucourechliev worked with Alfred Cortot, Luciano Berio, and Maderna, and at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios with Schaeffer, Henry, Ferrari, and Mache. Pousseur worked with Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Berio, and Stockhausen, and composed at several major European early electronic music studios. This lp was issued by the Limelight electronic-psych-jazz label known for their releases of Mecki Mark Men, Fifty Foot Hose, Paul Beaver, Bernie Krause, Henk Badings, Tom Dissevelt, Dick Raaijmakers, Ruth White, Roland Kirk, Paul Bley, Electronic Concept Orchestra, Melvin Jackson Funky Skull, etc., and should be of interest to fans of Tod Dockstader, Rune Lindblad, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, and Ilhan Mimaroglu.
