Description
Up for auction is a rare, signed (Norman Granz), (6) Record Book "The Jazz Scene" from 1949.
This is one of those jazz collectors' Holy Grails.
Inside this 14 7/8" x 12 5/8" gilt embossed, black cloth covered, ring bound, loose leaf album are (6) 12" vinyl 78 RPM records; a foldout print of an original drawing by David Stone Martin; 30 full page black & white photographs (including front & back end papers) of the participating musicians by Gjon Mili; a page containing the actual signature / autograph of Norman Granz & the limited edition number of this copy ---2463 of 5000 copies pressed. The leaders of the sessions included in this anthology are: Duke Ellington, Neal Hefti, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ralph Burns, George Handy, Charlie Parker, Willie Smith, Machito, Bud Powell. The records are VG + (no significant scratches that can be felt or heard; but many of these sides have a few visual-only scuffs or light marks which do not affect play). Overall this set looks as if it was very lightly played. The records are shiny with very light signs of wear. The spindle holes in the records show only light wear. The spine and cover have a bit of fading from the sun (see photos). The paper next to the sleeves have some yellowing (see photos for an example), other than that the book and records are great. The book is filled with many large black and white pictures of various artists that made up the "Jazz Scene" in the 1940's -1950's.This fantastic piece of Jazz History ships for free within the United States.
