Wax Flags is one of those import records featuring Frank Zappa that grooves on one's heart. Extremely phenomenal sound with a lot of audience noise make it cool to listen to, particularly since Zappa was such a stickler for excellent sound in a concert setting. The septet he leads on this New Year's Eve concert at UCLA's Pauley Pavillion includes guitarist Adrian Belew, drummer Terry Bozzio, and twin sets of keyboards played by Tommy Mars and Peter Wolf; the fare is pretty standard for the artist in the 1970s, though the producers had trouble identifying many of the songs. The parody "I Have Been in You" is directly targeted at a particularly weak record of the day (Peter Frampton's "I'm in You.") "Punky's Whips" was deemed too risky for Warner Bros. to release at the time, and its censorship became one of many reasons that prompted Zappa's successful lawsuit voiding his contract with the label. But there are not better recorded and performed versions of all of the songs within this two-LP set elsewhere, so it makes this release worth considering to hear Zappa and his band playing "Auld Lang Syne" at the stroke of midnight.
