Label/Format: Charisma – large original pink Hatter format with the correct B&C credits, these have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions, immaculately clean, fresh and highly attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces equally tiny and faint – hardly any at all on side two in fact, side one almost the same. These retain that lovely early deep rich colour – and importantly, the record plays superbly with very little unwanted, that as fans will know, is very difficult indeed.

Rarity: Much harder to find as a first issue and this one is extra special as it includes the very rare lyric inner sleeve – Yes, you read right – INNER SLEEVE, not the standard insert sheet. Only the second example of this I have ever seen – to show this so there can be no confusion, I have taken a picture of this inner with the top opened gently to show where the record was to be stored. VERY few copies ever included one of these, just about every example included a deep green (or a few brown) single card lyric sheets. Possible due to cost – or these were made in error? – this was quickly changed to the card sheet insert with a plain white inner sleeve. This inner sleeve in very fine condition as well – one tiny side split I neatly repaired to stop it widening and hardly noticeable. The main cover has a little wear, but replacements if deemed necessary, are far easier to find than a superb, hardly played first issue record that plays for most-all, beautifully. And that said, they must have the E. J. Day imprint as seen in close-up. And that inner sleeve will rarely surface. A copy for Genesis specialists and genuinely rare with this long-gone inner sleeve.

Brief Info: One of the best-loved Genesis albums and my personal favourite for the ‘Gabriel’ era. It even includes a hit single with ‘I Know What I Like’. More epic prog-rock with wonderful complex arrangements and immaculate production and musicianship – this album has it all. This is never an easy album to find with decent cover and record, the pressing quality – a known fact – always variable, often very noisy with surface sound and substantial crackle. This one plays very well with little unwanted, it appears hardly even played. The odd sporadic light tick or crackle trace on the quiet area is nigh-on impossible to avoid, especially if played on very sensitive equipment, but this has very of either. A very enjoyable listen and few originals will better it overall I feel sure. This is only the second example I have ever seen with the elusive deep green (almost black) lyric inner sleeve (NOT insert) but a real inner sleeve as seen in my pictures. All copies had an insert of variable thickness, but only a handful with a proper lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: a single format with no laminate protection, the surfaces are matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and including the original B&C credits. Includes the very rare deep green lyric INNER SLEEVE (this instead of the usual standard insert sheet). Second issue covers were made by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Very prone to all forms of wear, and being so pale makes it a difficult sleeve. In terms of wear, this front has fared well. A little rubbing near the bottom edge, with mild rim impression and darkening traces mostly near the top edge. Little creasing and the main graphic looks impressive. There is some waving near the bottom right corner area.

Cover Back: The back is nice with any grubbiness or marks little and light, put into context for such a pale solid area of colour. Any waviness this side is very gentle and light and less obvious than the front.

Top Edge: Straight with any rubbing or wear gentle, little and light.

Bottom Edge: This storage edge is a little less straight and has moderate rubbing for its full length.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little real wear or thickening, and guaranteed untrimmed. A couple of waves towards the bottom, one very small, one nearer moderate. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Very gentle bowing, but little actual wear. Solid with any compression little and light, here-and-there only, the text is near perfect and unworn, just centred a little low in manufacture.

Corners: At least moderate rubbing on the bottom pair to match the rest of the edge. The top pair have little, but a tiny dink to the right tip, overall fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: This original cover is not for purists, but as stated, far, far easier to find another cover than the record in super condition for looks and sound, and finding another lyric inner sleeve could prove immensely challenging. A very respectable example however, with most wear on the bottom edge and mildish waviness near the right corner. Many collectors will be satisfied with it.

The Lyric Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: but looks better in real terms. As stated, one edge had a neat central movement split which I repaired as neatly as possible, it registers little. This is a rare inner sleeve and few first issues will ever include it. A double-sided inner sleeve seems to have avoided many guides that only mentioned the thick card sheet that was the normal on early copies. Possibly to keep the cost down, this was soon removed and the sheet replaced it – or even a mistake and never really intended? This is constructed with two large internal flipbacks. This will be hugely prone to ring wear which this has avoided, minor rim impression is the very least to be expected. Very dark indeed, possibly the darkest shade of green possible, this appears almost black and it has largely avoided rubbing with any creasing little, fine and faint. The text on this is ultra sharp and precise and much higher definition than on the insert sheets. This will not be seen or offered often and finding it better will also prove difficult.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still – only a few very fine and faint hairlines seen under light, the owner kept the record inside the hard inner sleeve, thus a few minor surface blemishes will occur. But all are superficial and minor, there are no stylus scratches and the record plays superbly for most-all with very little unwanted. That is a huge task in-itself, few I have heard have been better than this. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. Pressed on pure vinyl by EMI, no mottle or impurities seen in the vinyl, viewed in standard room light, this looks superb, it appears hardly played being honest. An impressive first issue format record with all the correct run-out area matrixes and messages. The cover may have wear, but the record is lovely and should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic prog classic plays above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. In fact, this has to be one of the cleanest and quietest copies of this challenging album I have heard on vinyl for some considerable time. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, overall, a very fine clean pressing for a demanding album that has more than it’s fair share of quiet passages. The odd sporadic tick or surface sound trace being nigh-on unavoidable on this album, and bear in mind, Charisma pressing quality was often variable as collectors will already know. Few copies will match or outperform this one I feel sure. Being so little used of course is a major factor of course, but many even from new had inherent surface noise or even pressing flaws which this has avoided. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – I love this album and really it deserves it’s classic rock status. Yes, the cover is not for everyone, but the record more than compensates – and you cannot play a cover – the inner sleeve a genuine Genesis rarity for specialist collectors, I regard this as one of the most difficult ‘parts’ to find for any Genesis album.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
