Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only few, fine and faint spindle marks. Side one indeed has mere couple of tiny ones and just a shade more on side two. Without doubt, this has been played very little and came from a very impressive collection.

Weight of this Record: 158 grams. A very impressive weight for this early cut record, way over average for a standard pressing of this time.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first pressing, only after time did the band’s popularity grow and new fans investigate the earlier albums. By then, this was mostly via the pink Hatter label format which are relatively common.

Brief Info: Second album from one of the UK’s most famous ever rock bands. This is the highly collectable and superior Gabriel ‘Progressive’ era and these are far from common. After the debut album on Decca flopped, this sold poorly also, just scraping into the album charts at a lowly 98, it failed to chart at all in the US. Again the price guides give few clues to value and rarity on this album, this simply does not show up often and those that do often in very poor conditions. This is a very impressive example and one the best I have seen for some considerable time as an original. Early Genesis played complex, structured music that either appeals or doesn’t, this is certainly not the commercial sound this band eventually changed too later and their early music has to be worked on for maximum pleasure. I am always fearful on pressing quality on these vintage Charisma records, they do vary considerably and so often they have hidden pressing sounds or noise. As much as I loved the bands that recorded on this famous progressive label, some were spoilt by less than perfect sound. This one has no hidden pressing issues and offers mostly clear and enjoyable sound – this too with some surface marks on ‘Dusk’ on side two. These I would feel very confident were present from new, they cannot be felt or heard – merely fairly fine and totally superficial blemishes seen more under light. Few, if any copies of this treasured vintage album will ever play totally silent – the music is quite quiet at times and given the vintage and label, a little gentle surface traces will rarely, if ever be avoided. Finding this album with much better sound will prove very difficult indeed. The cover is also as fragile, again this is very attractive with any blemishes or wear incredibly light. The thin paper lyric insert is included also, and this is almost as made and guaranteed original of course. All-round this one sets the bar very high and will take a lot of beating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with a matt textured finish on the outside faces. The centre is smooth and has the E. J. Day imprint and B&C credits as can be seen in my close up picture.

Cover Front: This fragile front will seldom be seen a great deal better than this: clean, fresh and very attractive indeed with barely any ageing or noteworthy marks and crease-free. The odd hint of a tone trace if being ultra critical, but look point-blank to try to find. The texturing is superb with no speckle to the raised areas. Also retaining superb rich colour which is hugely worthy of special mention as this can be prone to fading. The only minor hint of any wear is a little tiny, patchy rub traces on the hard top edge fold, again look hard. Put simply: this is a piece of classic progressive rock art that looks little short of immaculate.

Cover Back: The back is very similar but more vulnerable of course with a very heavy thick record inside all this time. Hence avoiding ringwear is immensely difficult, but none present here at all. Again the odd very faint tone trace and there is a very small tip crease to the bottom left corner. But this again sets a very high standard and how many better ones will be put up for auction will be few.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, practically Mint(-), my highest level of grading – this looks fantastic with the textured surface again clean and fresh looking. Just a minor natural semi-crease to the right of the central fold, this rarely avoided on the wider spine covers.

Top Edges: A little very light patchy rubbing, mostly on the front hard fold. With fairly pale colour on this area, it has minimal visibility or visual impact.

Bottom Edges: A little light rubbing on the back edge, again it registers little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp to very sharp with barely any hints of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A super spine that is made thick and robust. Solid, straight with barely any hint of compression and folded almost square, so any overhang on any edge is minimal. The original covers had no text and the artwork flows around. The graphic is almost perfect with any small rubbing pretty much confined to the very end tips. Any tone traces are again faint, minimal and small – barely worthy of mention really – overall, very impressive.

Corners: Tip rubs are small, these on the spine ends. The right four are tiny and all retain excellent shape and definition with any tip creasing, of which there is little, light.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover in super condition, one to hold and enjoy, The early ‘Day’ covers have deeper embossing and certainly more prone to all forms of wear. Few collectors will be disappointed with this one.

The Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: with nothing of any real note to fault. Clean, fresh and uncreased with razor sharp edges. This has not aged at all and both sides sides are devoid of grubbiness or toning. Thin and fragile and this could hardly be beaten.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): The plain white unlined inner is included also. This has also aged little and all edges remain unsplit with no repairs. Minimal discolouration and hardly a crease to be seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) / EXCELLENT(+): with just those aforementioned surface marks on ‘Dusk’ that have no sound. I am certain these were present from new, I know the source of this record very well and without doubt, this has been played very little. A superb visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine, intense black and very heavily pressed. Both playing surfaces and labels are impressive and visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare original prog classic plays up too and mostly above it’s visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are gentle and light and very infrequent, a reminder, this does have a number of quieter passages and I truly believe ‘silence’ is a near impossible ask from a pink pressing. Just remember what so many of these could and indeed were played on. Many music lovers still used old heavy-tracking mono record players for these types and often with disastrous consequences. One jolt or arm drop and another deep penetrating mark was inflicted. That delicate and complex sound information in those grooves often shredded by worn chipped stylus that ruined the audio quality. This is a real delicate and intricate album (as already stated), but this very heavy record with deep grooves gave a very enjoyable and impressive account. A copy NEVER exposed to anything but a quality stereo system – and only sparsely when so. The delicate instruments have an in the room quality and the finer detail like the triangle strikes are incredibly forward and sharp. If absolute dead silence is mandatory, well the CD version is an option, but for those who enjoy the lovely realistic strums of 12-string guitars, delicate flutes and plucked strings, vinyl still has the edge and impact. This is quite an intricate recording and work and not that commercial compared to their later titles. Few available early examples will better this I feel sure. The lack of significant pops or clicks is a major bonus on this album, those quiet passages have such fine compacted grooves that damage more easily. This copy will prove very challenging to find significantly better, and this scarce album is worthy of high recommendation. Being truly honest, I can hardly imagine finding one (as an original) a great deal better – a really beauty all-round example.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
