In the world of early rhythm & blues and doo wop, Hank Ballard was the very definition of earthiness. Though influenced by high-energy gospel vocal groups, Ballard's music with the Midnighters couldn't have been more diametrically opposed in terms of subject matter: his lyrics were filled with raunchy double-entendres that left little to the imagination, pushing the envelope of what was considered acceptable in the '50s. His songs were sometimes banned on the radio, but that only made him an even bigger jukebox favorite among black audiences. Ballard's hard-driving, rhythmic style was also an underappreciated influence on the rawer side of R&B, particularly on a young James Brown; plus, his composition "The Twist" — recorded for a hit by Chubby Checker — became one of the biggest hits in rock & roll history.

Hank Ballard should have titled one of his albums "Bad Dude." Nobody bites into lyrics like this legendary R&B/soul singer. Often imitated but rarely duplicated, Ballard rocks you unmercifully on fast numbers and causes heart palpitations on the slow stuff. You won't find some of these songs on other compilations, which makes it an essential. Originally issued on King records in 1961.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seams

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has some MINOR, light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity  (less than 5 square inch in size and barely visible).

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
