Hugh Hopper
'1984'
CBS, UK, 1973
65466
STUPPIDLY DIFFICULT modern progressive jazz rock with everything and the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. Hopper was, as a former member of Soft Machine, no stranger to awkward time signatures. The Softs had mutated away from psych and entered the world of free form jazz masterminded by Hopper and Ratledge had taken a serious hold pushing the band into a convoluted niche that you either love or hate.
Clearly Hopper was in his element here stretching boundaries and taking his serious jazz prog to another level. Really, this album has to be one of the great British free form jazz excursions alongside work by John Stevens, Nucleus, Norma Winstone and Neil Ardley. Killer arrangements and exemplary playing with barely a note out of place.
Top copy!
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
Pressing: CBS, UK, 1973 - Original orange label
Vinyl: In beautiful unplayed condition - super clean and shiny surface. One lone spindle mark on side two label abut no other signs of use whatsoever. Grades as shop fresh MINT-!
Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Very fragile and thin cover that is uusally prone to massive wear - it's virtually impossible to find nice clean copies like this one. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no split seams, miniscule (yes truly!) ring wear and no creases. Really, quite an impossible sleeve to find in decent condition. This one is about the best I've ever seen. Grades as MINT-!
Inserts: None
