Hawkwind In Search of Space with Log Book
UK 1st press A 1U /B 1U
Matrix UAG 29202 A 1U / B 1U
stampers S1: 1 GO, S2: 1P
"Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford"
The innovative sleeve was designed by Barney Bubbles (Colin Fulcher). Folded, the die-cuts interlock at the front centre, the shapes forming an 'X', the initial character of the title, however when opened out, the die-cut sleeve forms a bird shape with outstretched wings - like a hawk. The back cover has a blurred shot of ‘Stacia’ dancing on-stage, with text that encapsulates the band: "Technicians of Space Ship Earth, This is Your Captain Speaking, Your Captain is Dead" This was 1970s Acid rock at its best.
Sleeve: Owing to its complex design this cover is often subject to misuse, many are ripped, worn or torn.
On this copy all edges straight and true, no rips, splits or writing, spine text is clear, very (very) light creasing, and light edge rub (see photos) graded EX- or strong VG+ at worse - yes there is a difference
Original inner sleeve
Original Hawkwind Log book complete, fully stapled (no rusting), all pages complete, no rips or writing, no adverse creasing. Only defect is a small tear on top outside corner, see photos.
Labels: Original beige UAG labels, no writing, extremely light signs of handling only (see photos) EX-
Vinyl: Retains original glossy bright sheen - no nasties or groove wear. Side A is visually graded Ex, Side B has one scuff mark and two small scratches one the last track/dead wax, none of which affect play in anyway - there are some lite pips once the record finishes. A few light wispy lines from sleeve removal only. Overall great condition (sounds worse than it is), quite a rarity in an era of parties and mishandled vinyl, graded VG+ just to be safe
Audio: Nice audio separation, no jumps, sticks or skips. Has 'light' static crackle on the run in, run out, and in between some tracks, it’s not overpowering in anyway (a pro clean would get rid of this) and doesn't affect play. Other than that plays through with no problems (played on Project carbon - blue Ortofon) strong VG+
I have tried to be honest and transparent in my description - the photographs form part of the description. Questions are welcome, don't hesitate to ask. I have good feedback (and positive comments) as both a buyer and seller, so you can buy with confidence. I am a collector for 47+ years the few records I sell are either the results of upgrades, duplicates or a bit of thinning every now and again. If anything is not as expected, please contact me straight away, and I will do everything to resolve any problems without argument.
I strictly adhere to the Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide using one + or - for addition guidance:
Audio: audio quality can differ from one pressing to another and unless you have two copies to compare it is sometimes difficult to know. Audio quality can also vary from one system to another and while I try to describe my audio experience it might not be the same as somebody elses.
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
