WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! MEGARARE and Hard-To-Find original Philips Records very first PROMOTIONAL Stereo press, released by Philips Records in Chile in 1966, made and distributed by Discos Philips (Philips Records Chile), licensed from Smash Records, USA, through non-credited Phonogram International B.V., Holland (as confirmed with the Chilean catalog number), catalog number 843462, with machine etched matrix numbers CAA 843 462 1Y 2 670 113 C1 in Side 1 and C AA 843 462 2Y 1 670 112 C1 in Side 2, with traditional blue/silver Philips Records of the period, with silver “Philips” and logo at top. Yes, Sirs, WHAT A FIND!!!

“MEMPHIS BEAT” by Jerry Lee Lewis, was originally released in 1966 in USA and the same year we got this album released here in Chile and, like usual in the period, we got it with a UNIQUE COVER, made of a single piece of thin cardboard, folded in the middle, faking a gatefold cover and kept all together by a plastic bag. Front cover keeps strictly the original US artwork, with the picture of Jerry Lee Lewis and the band behind, with album title and tracklist written in English only, the only differences are the Philips logo in the same place of original US Smash Records logo and the boxed Stereo logo below the word “Beat”, with an additional pink diamond-shaped sticker with the text in Spanish “SERIE DIAMANTE – LA SERIE DE LOS GRANDES EXITOS” (“Diamond Series – The Series Of The Big Hits”, in English). Back cover is different, it has the name of Jerry Lee Lewis at top, but the album title is omitted, with a brief review about Jerry Lee Lewis and this album, and tracklist written in Spanish only, except “Mathilda”, which doesn’t need translation, with full credits for songwriters. In labels the album title is omitted and the tracklist is written in Spanish only, except “Mathilda”, with full credits for songwriters. In Side 1 it’s the white PROMOTIONAL sticker “INVENDIBLE – DISCO PROMOCIONAL” (“Unmarketable – Promotional Record”, in English). It’s also interesting to notice the errors in some names of songwriters. “D.L. Lipscomb” (for country singer Dickey Lee), correctly written in back cover, it’s misspelled “D.P. Lipscomb” in label and the song credited is, of course, “She Thinks I Still Care”, the song he co-wrote with Steve Duffy, but here in Chile the name of Steve Duffy was omitted. The songwriters of song “Just Because” are the brothers Bob and Joe Shelton and Sidney Robin, but here in Chile they only wrote “Shelton – Shelton”, Sidney Robin was also omitted. But not all are errors, here in Chile the credit for song “Sticks And Stones” is for “T. Turner”, because the singer Titus Turner wrote the song, but for some reason I don’t really know, in original US and Dutch issues of the album, the credit for songwriter of “Sticks And Stones” is “H. Glover”, for Henry Glover, which’s wrong. So, here you have the chance to get and own this great album by Jerry Lee Lewis, in this MEGARARE PROMOTIONAL CHILEAN PRESS, with UNIQUE COVER, UNIQUE ERRORS and Spanish-written song titles, a record almost never seen and maybe auctioned here in eBay by the very first time, A MUST TO HAVE for all fans, lovers and collectors of Rock ‘n’ Roll and Country/Pop music, and especially for all fans, lovers and collectors of Jerry Lee Lewis!!!

The cover was already described and it’s in VG+ or even EX- condition, clean and clear, with some wear in all edges, more evident in corners, with some creases and little rips, with also evident age browning in back cover and some blemishes, with faint ring marks and also humidity marks in back cover. The record is in nice EX or EX+ condition both sides, glossy and clean, with light scuffs and hairlines, more evident in Side 2, with some little soft scratches, which don’t affect play at all. Labels are in great EX or even EX+ condition both sides, with some spindle hole wear, micro tears and a faint factory imperfection in Side 2, with the WHITE PROMOTIONAL STICKER free of marks of any kind. The sound is in strong EX or EX+ condition both sides, loud, clear and clean, virtually no background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), with some very minimal and mostly barely audible occasional soft crackles and light clicks here and there, more evident in the silent parts between tracks, which don’t really cause major distraction from the loud and clear sound this record keeps from the beginning to the end. Overall, maybe this record could not to be for the strictest Minty minds or audiophiles, but for sure it’s still a record with a very nice cover and with the record with a very nice glossy look, almost immaculate labels and great sound quality after about 58 years, which won’t disappoint anyone and will satisfy any serious collector who knows the real level of rarity of this Chilean record. Just try to remember how many times have you seen this record before, your own answer will tell you how much rare it’s. What a find!!! We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
