Label/Format: Island - pink i format with heavily textured surfaces and deep inner ring ridge (Please see my label scans)

Label Conditions: Two lovely clean, fresh examples with that lovely real pastel-pink colour. Spindle marks are light to light+ and this very early, and more unusual finished pink i copy plays beautifully throughout. Owned from new by one person and another from that collection of hardly played records recently purchased.

Cat Number: ILPS 9085.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. A vast weight for this or any standard record.

Rarity: Quite rare on this more elusive label, and even more so in this very attractive and lightly played condition. I have seen far less of these than even the first pressed mono or stereo and how many know this pressing also exists in mono as well? Being honest, I did not know either until I actually saw one a couple of months ago. Unfortunately the sound had been ruined by being played on a blunt mono stylus so I could not keep or offer it. This beauty however, is on the other end of the spectrum.

Original Year of Release: 1968. This one pressed in January 1970 as confirmed by the original inner sleeve date-code.

Matrix Nos: ILPS + 9085 + A 2 / ILPS + 9085 + B 2 [very distinct, deeply punched Roman style characters]

Musicians: Ian Anderson - flute, mouth organ, claghorn, piano and vocals; Mick Abrahams - guitar, nine string guitar and vocal; Clive Bunker - drums, hooter and charm bracelet; Glenn Cornick - bass guitar.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jethro Tull’s debut masterpiece and many agree it was never bettered, it even charted at 10 in the UK. For sure this is a rock classic, a debut of incredible maturity that fitted in nicely between blues, rock and prog. Mick Abrahams was the darling of the clubs, and for a brief moment offered a challenge to Clapton, especially with his showpiece ‘Cat’s Squirrel’. Shortly afterwards he left the band to form Blodwyn Pig. Anderson became the undisputed leader and live, he and the band were tremendous. On record they rarely got much better than this and ‘Dharma for One’ that opens side two has probably the best ever (short) drum solo ever - this just has to be heard on stereo vinyl that images brilliantly - breathtaking sound, as is the whole album and a truly super example to enjoy it on.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being ultra critical. A gatefold format, laminated front and back with the inside matt and smooth – this one has the standard spine and no flipbacks inside. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day, the first wide spine cover was uncredited.

Lamination – Front & Back: Stunning artwork seen to near maximum advantage under very shiny, fresh and clear lamiante that shows few marks and has barely any traces of any friction rubs or dulling. All is fully adhered with the one very small exception, a small blister on the front bottom right corner – all else is solid what a difference that makes to this beautiful cover. Often seen with major lifting on the spine edge, but not here. Most of any few creases, on the edges as fine hairline types with just a modest half moon on the back that shows little. Possible slight light reaction to the front spine hinge fold which is very faint indeed and the exposed strips on the opening edges totally clean and unworn or chipped. Finding this classic cover better will never prove easy and this is almost as attractive as they ever get.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor rubbing on the dark edge areas that few will ever escape totally, this apart, nothing else to fault.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four very neat with no apparent wear, these being very straight too.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear and no trimming guaranteed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: I reitterate again, this has a standard spine, quite similar in design to a standard ‘Sgt Pepper’. Thus it has a natural central crease formed from opening, but unlike many with this style of construction, the laminate here is still fully intact and unpeeled. All the text is present and unworn but has very slightly sunken into the natural formed crease.

Corners: All very neat and crisp with barely any traces of wear with no dinks.

Cover Summary: A wonderful example of this famous old cover, not quite as old as the band look on the cover but this is now over 41 years old. This should please most collectors and will prove immensely difficult to find much better – well worthy of a second look.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style inner that is date-coded /0170. This has aged a little with a couple of corner creases, these often done to hold the record inside. Minimal discolour and two very neat, crisp window circles and very clear lining. No edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and a wonderful looking piece, I think extra special with such beautiful clean, real pastel-pink labels in the very first issued pink i format. So hard to find and rarely will one show in better condition than this. Records of this considerable age and popularity are so seldomly seen so clean and clearly very modestly played. This a top-quality heavyweight pressing with any surface blemishes tiny, few and faint, any surface marks are minor and nothing penetrating at all. An intense black record that retains a genuine freshness that only ones little used ever can. Massively pressed also to glean the maximum fidelity from those deeper grooves. It’s one that will please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic debut album plays even above it’s high visual grading to the maximum with practically nothing to fault. Stunning clean stereo sound that has a powerful mix and images superbly, check out that incredible short drum solo on ‘Dharma For One’. This plays with clean and dynamic sound and devoid of the dreaded distortions so many of the early copies have now inherited. The innermost songs with that delicate, difficult flute sections always are a concern for any copy played too many times on heavy equipment - no worries here, the sound is sharp with effortless tracking and clarity. This copy never exposed to unworthy equipment and certainly never non-stereo. It should now remain so for many years when played on a modern lightweight turntable. This is not an easy album and so often it disappoints even on clean visual copies. This plays practically devoid of irritating surface noise and no pops and clicks, anything unwanted is minuscule and keeps up the reputation of the earliest-made pink pressings with those deeply punched matrixes. The final short song, the delicate ‘Round’ plays very well too with little unwanted. I have heard this sound horrible on some copies with major pressing noise and distortions. This has little to fault at all and rounds-off a wonderful listening experience. This rarer textured pink i stereo example should please most-all collectors and again merits my highest recommendation.

End Piece: Again it’s frightening to think how old this record is, to find one this clean and playing so well is marvellous. Who would have thought well over forty years ago, Ian Anderson and his band would still be playing under this name? This record and cover were robustly made and it’s a good thing they were. Just holding this vintage stereo pressing is a joy - it was subsequently pressed many more times, this being amongst the rarest made. Most pink i copies have smooth surfaces and are lighter pressed. The cover is a work-of-art in-itself and finding one better will prove immensely difficult. Play this record loud and prepare to be thrilled - a true classic worthy of a good home – Yes I rather enjoyed this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
