Ascension is a jazz album by John Coltrane recorded in 1965 and released in 1966.
It is often considered to be a watershed album, with the albums released before it being more conventional in structure and the albums released after it being looser, free jazz inspired works.
In addition, it signalled Coltrane's interest in moving away from the quartet format.
Coltrane described Ascension in a radio interview as a "big band thing", although it resembles no big band recording made before it.
Jazz musician Dave Liebman, commenting on Ascension, recalled that the album was the "torch that lit the free jazz thing".
The album was identified by Chris Kelsey in his Allmusic essay "Free Jazz: A Subjective History" as one of the 20 Essential Free Jazz Albums
Side One: Ascension (Part 1) 18:35
Side Two: Ascension (Part 2) 19:15
LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, bright and unmarked labels with only a couple of spindle traces per side.
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+
Both surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen with just light and superficial brush marks visible under normal light and some wispy hairlines visible under bright light - none of these have any audio impact
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT
Sensational copy which plays beautifully throughout with no audio issues of note.
Played just once or twice on top quality equipment the sound performance is flawless - crystal clear, clean, fresh and incredibly immediate
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT++
The flipback cover is also in superb condition with a deep glossy sheen to the laminated front and a remarkably clean back - with just one light dirty mark (please see close-up photo)
The edges and spine are practically unworn and all spine text is clear and bold
INNER SLEEVE: EXCELLENT++
The original HMV inner sleeve is clean and fresh with no seam splits
