Crescent mono autographed LP (Impulse, MONO A-66)
Cond.: VG+/VG- (cover/disc)
DESCRIPTION:Truly exceptional item -- John Coltrane's autograph is extremely rare, as he died in 1967 prematurely. This LP was dedicated to Tony Rulli, a saxophone dealer from the Selmer Company out of Eikhart, Indiana. Coltrane had met Rulli through Miles Davis in late 50s as a result of playing in his group and Davis' existing relationship with Rulli. Coltrane maintained a relationship with Rulli through the 60s, and it was Rulli who sold him his first soprano saxophone.
As you can see in the photos of the back cover, Rulli's full name and address in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey is imprinted in the laminate. I have compared the Coltrane autograph to authentic examples and there is no doubt in my mind that this is genuine, given the age wear on the cover as well as its' provenance and dedication. The condition of the cover is a weak VG+, seams are all intact, but there is laminate peeling on the spine near the bottom, see pics for detail. There is also a minor tear inside the gatefold, this is also detailed in the photos. The cover also has general wear, but look at the photos and you will get a good idea of what shape this is in, as they are fairly comprehensive. The disc is VG- and has many scratches and loss of gloss. However, I am sure whoever purchases this item can replace the disc should they so choose.
A truly one of a kind item. It goes without saying that this type of autograph is steeped in historical significance. Don't miss this chance at owning a piece of jazz history.
