Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces few, fine and very faint. Lovely to see these early original Asylum labels looking this clean and white.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very impressive weight for this record, the last one I offered around four years ago was 20 grams lighter.

Rarity: Moderate: but early-pressed originals are harder. Especially ones that offer near perfect clean sound with a truly gorgeous original double gatefold cover. This one even included a matt black inner sleeve, which I have not seen with the album before.

Brief Info: This was Joni’s fifth album and one of her most commercially successful being issued between the classics ‘Blue’ and ‘Court and Spark’. It even included a modest hit single in ‘You Turn Me on I’m a Radio’ which she wrote after record company requested a radio friendly song. The album justifiably received excellent reviews and went silver in the UK. The lavish cover is a double gatefold, it includes a nude shot of Joni taken from the back, this caused mixed comments at the time, but like everything this lady ever produces, it was done in the best possible taste, as was her first use of the ‘F’ expletive in her lyrics on ‘Woman of Heart and Mind’, which is blanked off on the inside gatefold lyrics. This is a lovely copy with a very clean cover, and the record – even though it has a few mild surface marks – plays nigh-on perfectly with no crackle, pressing issues or clicks. A record that offers maximum pleasure, a true delight from one of my favourite female artists ever. If I did already own a similar copy, this would be not offered at all.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated double gatefold cover, the record is stored via the centre on the first opening. All surfaces are matt finished mostly with smooth surfaces, the first gatefold spread has a slightly rougher feel. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, this copy included a matt black inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Viewed full-on normally, this front looks little short of perfect. Angled viewing under light shows a few light surface marks. Ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with lovely colour and no creasing or rubbing. Still a real looker.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same and the lack of ring wear is always a major bonus. Any surface blemishes on the back are tiny and very faint indeed as seen again with angled viewing.

Cover Inner Gatefolds: All four faces look superb with no grubbiness or wear. The entrance area inside the first fold is undamaged and very strong, the floral artwork was done by Joni herself.

Top Edges: All dead straight and practically as new.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same again, any rub traces minuscule.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely even a hint of wear. The back edge is closed as the record enters from the inside. This is straight and unrubbed, the two single thickness card edges are both crisp and very sharp indeed, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A supreme thickly made spine: Solid, straight, uncompressed, uncrushed and folded very square, so all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the surface unrubbed right up to the very ends and even the folds retain all ink with no abrasions or scuffs. This thick spine looks absolutely fantastic.

Corners: All in amazing condition with any tip rubbing beyond tiny. All retain better than excellent shape up to practically as made.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this lavish 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. I reitterate, although there are a few light surface marks on the front, they do not show when viewed full-on, only tilted towards light, there is NO ink loss at all. This beautifully attractive item should please many, and even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this copy that came from a private lot, included a matt unlined black inner sleeve. This with a gently rough surface and very matt finished. Fresh and very dark with any hints of creasing few and very light indeed. One edge has a small neat split which I have repaired to stop it potentially widening in the future, it has very modest visibility and all others are very sound and strong.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. Just a couple of fine surface marks on side two that have NO sound whatsoever. Only really seen again under light and any others are ultra fine and faint. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence and it plays superbly. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Joni Mitchel album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A genuine high fidelity recording that sounds incredible. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. A pure joy from beginning to end, this was a real pleasure. Few copies will match or outperform this early SYLA pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
