Flattery has a chain of command in music. If Badfinger emulated the sound of the Beatles, there were a number of bands that followed that channeled the Beatles through Badfinger, like Peru’s We All Together or Germany’s Key. Add Holland’s Jumbo to that list, as this 1971 single attests. “Say the Right Things” is practically a tribute to Badfinger, a brilliantly catchy and somewhat morose little pop number that even sounds like Pete Ham is singing it. Same goes for flipside “I Want You,” maybe even moreso, a tremendously Beatlesque pop gem that benefits from perfect harmonies and more of that sad Pete Ham vocal style. If there were a Badfinger tribute band (other than the two guys left from Badfinger who are touring now), Jumbo would be an excellent choice – this is about as dead-on perfect a recreation of the Badfinger sound as you’ll find – with melodies just as strong too! Jumbo sprung from the ashes of Dutch band the Eddysons, who took some of their musical cues straight from the Fab Four, if only because Badfinger hadn’t formed yet.
