Description
The Jazz Scene, a numbered six-disk set of 12" 78s, assembled by Norman Granz and signed by him. Issued in an edition of 5,000 on Mercury records in 1949, it has a book-like cover of black-cloth covered boards embossed with gold type. Package includes over 25 full-page, gorgeous black and white photos by Gjon Mill, a fold-out illustration by David Stone Martin, and biographical notes about each featured artist by Norman Granz. Featured artists include Duke Ellington, Neil Hefti, (two sides each) Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ralph Burns, George Handy, Charlie Parker, Willie Smith, Machito, and Bud Powell (one side each).
Cover is structurally sound, has some light rubbing and a few horizontal white lines on the front. As with every copy of this that I've seen, some of the matte paper inside has yellowed considerably from age and there are a few pages on which there is a light amount of ink residue from photos on the facing pages. But all pages are intact, and the photos are in superb shape, no yellowing or other problems, very close to new condition. Disks are likewise excellent, all sides grading between strong VG+ and M-, with only a few light paper scuffs or very light scratches/marks keeping these from looking like the day they were pressed. They appear to have seen very little play and were well cared for when they did get played.
There's a great site on-line at microgroove.jp/mercury/TheJazzScene.shtml that includes a lot of background on this set (note that I have nothing to do with the site, and the copy of The Jazz Scene pictured there is not mine) if you want to know more.
Be aware that the shipping charges listed are not correct, but ebay won't allow me to put in a higher amount for Media Mail--I expect it will actually cost about $8, but we can also look at Priority Mail or other options if you prefer. Also, I've put $60 international shipping as I expect it will cost about that much to ship it overseas, though it could be more--this set is heavy. In any case, I will charge my actual shipping cost, whatever that turns out to be, and no more.
GRADING
M- A flawless or nearly flawless record that appears to have seen little or no play.
VG+ Full gloss, a few light marks. A very, very attractive record that has seen limited play and has been well cared for.
VG More marks and scratches, but still a nice record. Scratches may be fairly numerous, but will be light.
VG- Lots of marks and scratches but no gouges or major problems. Not a beautiful record, but still serviceable, not junk.
G+ and G Heavy wear and marks, plays through okay.
