Description
It's hard to believe after hearing the eloquence of "Then I'll Be Tired of You" or the title track, but John Coltrane's ballad mastery was the last of his skills to receive widespread appreciation. The notion that Coltrane the balladeer was as commanding as Coltrane the uptempo wizard or Coltrane the blues player finally gained acceptance in the early 60s, when this album first appeared and quickly became an important exhibit in the reconsideration.
Stardust actually consists of two separate recording sessions that took place at the studio of the legendary Rudy Van Gelder in 1958. The incredible line up for these sessions included, in addition to John Coltrane on tenor saxophone; Wilbur Harden on flugelhorn and trumpet; Freddie Hubbard also on trumpet; Red Garland on piano; Paul Chambers on bass; Jimmy Cobb on drums; and Art Taylor also on drums.
The extended performances on Stardust boast additional delights, including Chambers' arco bass on "Stardust," Garland's well-paced choruses on "Time After Time," some of Harden's best trumpet work on "Love Thy Neighbor," and Hubbard's earliest on "Then I'll Be Tired of You"; they were recorded at Coltrane's final two sessions for Prestige. This Washington Ave. MONO copy of this superb Coltrane outing is conservatively graded for your satisfaction and the vinyl is a solid VG+. The cover is a solid VG with some moderate ring wear on the black cover and slightly worn corners. The labels are super clean and vibrant. The spindle hole is tight. Van Gelder stamped in dead wax. The record plays beautifully very close to new. You will be thoroughly satisfied with this heavy vinyl, deep groove mono Prestige Coltrane classic record (unless you are holding out for a stone cold mint copy (good luck with that!)).
