Description
The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton: Chef d'Oeuvre (1967 for tape); Apolliana (1969 for tape); Sones de San Blas (1970 for tape); Nevsehir (1971 for tape); CCCP (1969 for tape); Homage to Orpheus (1969 for tape); 'Ofa atu Tonga (1973 for tape); Times Square Times Ten (1969 for tape). Folkways FTS 33437
Rare 1974 lp with an eclectic array of excellent electronic/musique concrete compositions described by Appleton as being "like dreams heard, where sound events are scrambled, where they assume an importance previously unnoticed... working with sound objects as recognizable referents and as musical gestures." Apolliana uses sounds of astronauts, space exploration, space-themed children's toys, and earth-to-moon conversations. Sones de San Blas, Nevsehir, and 'Ofa atu Tonga incorporate processed ethnic music and field recordings from various locales around the world visited by the composer, including strange semi-scripted telephone conversations in broken English that venture into the realm of text-sound composition (influenced by Charles Amirkhanian, Clark Coolidge, Brion Gysin, etc.). Chef d'Oeuvre takes a television commercial as its source, satirically splicing and filtering a Chef Boyardee jingle in an early exercise in what today would be called media collage or plunderphonics (i.e. Negativland, People Like Us, John Oswald, Cassette Boy, Tape Beatles, etc.). Times Square Times Ten features subway and other subterranean sounds of New York City in "an attempt at aural archaeology." This lp overlaps slightly with Appleton's album on Flying Dutchman but is mostly exclusive material. Highly recommended.
Appleton is a filmmaker and early electronic music composer who studied under Pierre Schaeffer at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios (home of Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Francois-Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, etc.). He also worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center (home of Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Milton Babbitt), at Swedish Radio with Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Sten Hanson and Bengt-Emil Johnson, at the Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College alongside Christian Wolff, and at the NHK Tokyo Electronic Music Studio (where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Karlheinz Stockhausen pioneered electronic music). Appleton helped with the design and construction of the Synclavier, one of the first digital synthesizers, and has associated closely with Steve Reich.
