King Crimson have been influential both on the early 1970s progressive rock movement and many contemporary artists. The band has earned a large cult following. They were ranked No. 87 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock The debut album, "In the Court of the Crimson King", was released in October 1969. Lead singer Fripp would later describe it as having been "an instant smash" and "New York's acid album of 1970".
