KING OLIVER’S CREOLE JAZZ BAND<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Mandy Lee Blues
I’m Going Away ToWear You Off My Mind
Gennett 5134
The performances:
Richmond, Indiana, April 6 1923. A momentous day for jazz. King Oliver’s first recording session, widely considered his best, when 9 classic, unforgettable pieces were set down on shellac. Like all the Olivers of this period, these sides are mainly ensemble pieces, with a few featured solos. Mandy Lee has a Dodds break early on, later an extended Dodds solo. Louis is heard playing a powerful lead here and there, but doesn’t solo, while King provides a trademark wa wa break halfway through, and at the very end. The tempo is medium fast and loping, as it is for I’m Going Away, which features a solo chorus from Lil on piano. Listening to these Olivers, and hearing the sheer density of all the ensemble playing, makes you imagine how exhausted they must all have been at the end of a set.
Rarity:
Demand for Oliver Gennetts in decent condition far outweighs supply.
Condition:
It plays a good E, without any help from filters. It shows little or no wear, but there are little scuffs and scratches and some white substance in some of the grooves. It might well benefit from cleaning. Labels are E+, with oval Jazz Man record store sticker on s1.
Postage at cost.
