Recorded in late 1970 for the Three Blind Mice label, this session finds young Japanese alto and soprano saxophonist Kosuke Mine joining members of the Watanabe Sadao Quartet plus trombonist Takashi Imai for a sharp, swinging set. Mine's tone is full of urgency yet finely controlled, darting through the brisk opener 'Y.M.' with guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo matching him for fluency and bite. 'Brother-In-Law' digs into a cooler, more spacious groove, while 'Striped Slacks' stretches out into fast bop interplay, Masuo again delivering crisp, articulate runs. The two takes of 'Chin-San' close the set in contrasting moods - the first relaxed and exploratory, the second tauter and more direct. With Yoshio Suzuki's supple bass and Hiroshi Murakami's precise, propulsive drumming, the quintet balances youthful fire with seasoned musicianship, captured in the warm, present sound that made Three Blind Mice such an essential documenter of Japan's early jazz vanguard.
