From 1966, come Kwela by Gwigwi's Band on 77 Records AFRO101. This is an EXTREMELY rare original UK pressing of the ultra-rare Kwela LP by Gwigwi's Band. The band was made up of six musicians, including four South Africans. They went to London at the time they did this LP and consisted of Gwigwi Mrwebi,Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Ronnie Beer,Coleridge Goode and Laurie Allen. Chris McGregor went on to record many LPs in the UK prog jazz world, while Laurie Allen played drums for Gong and Robert Wyatt. Coleridge Goode and Ronnie Beer became well known jazz players in the UK! Dudu Pukwana is a giant in the Afro jazz scene and is extremely well known! Doug Dobel, who produced the album also owned the 77 Records label and the 77 Record Store which were located in London. There are 16 songs on the album, featuring Kwela music, which was a popular South African dance music at this time. Each of the 16 tracks features one of the trio of Dudu Pukwana, Gwigwi Mrwebi or Chris McGregor soloing. Often all of them appear on the same track as well! This is an extremely rare album and should be of interest to anyone in the jazz, as well as Afro beat or funk! Also of interest to people interested in the UK jazz scene and Progressive scene as it was occuring in the UK at this time!
