? Some of the most iconic guitar parts in history were created at the famous Abbey Road studios in London. And a big part of that guitar recording history were some of the beautiful, fat sounding guitar sounds on the Beatle’s albums. What made many of those solos so special and iconic was a technique created by John Lennon and engineer Ken Townsend called “automatic double tracking” where a copy of the original signal played more or less simultaneously alongside it, with just a slight delay, making it sound like two guitars were playing the same part together. The effect was a thicker, fuller, majestic tone. And for a long time the only way to get this effect was with massively expensive studio gear. There were some chorus type pedals that could get you close, but Robert Keeley has just created the first pedal specifically geared towards recreating that famous double tracking sound first produced at Abbey Road. In addition though, the 30ms double tracker is designed to work not just with guitar, but bass, keyboards and even vocals as well.
And Keeley’s thrown in a few other tricks. A reverb control on the pedal adds an effect closely modeled on another famous Abbey Road sound – the reverb chamber from its Studio 2 as well as a slapback mode that just nails that Memphis rockabilly sound, as a well as a beautiful thick chorus.
The Keeley 30ms Double Tracker offers three different modes -
In ABBEY MODE, you can get everything from that fat, full doubled sound to classic whirling chorus and detune tones. DIMENSION provides a wonderful three-dimensional chorus effect, much deeper and more complex than your standard chorus and SLAPBACK MODE gives you a fast delay/reverb which emulates all those wonderful rockabilly guitar sounds first made famous by Scotty Moore at Sam Phillips’ Memphis Sun Studios while recording with Elvis Presley, as well as rockabilly legends like Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy and years later, modernized rockabilly legend Brian Setzer.
The Double Tracker can also be used in stereo with Double Tracker Pro mode, which cuts out the Reverb and the four controls serve as two sets of two to alter the tuning and delay of each of the two signals created.
Internal switches control the wet output to have either dry and effected sounds, or just the effect, giving you true double tracking in stereo, live.
It really is a cool unique effect and you pretty much get three in one, with the mode switch taking you from fat Beatles and Mike Campbell/Tom Petty classic solos, to complex, beautiful chorus and then instant Memphis rockabilly, all at the flick of a switch.
My pedal comes with its original box and paperwork and is in great condition inside and out.
