This red / plum pressing plays with fantastic audio with only very minimal interference on S2 and this is detailed below. S1 is stunning and all the tracks including of course the classic 'Stairway To Heaven' could hardly play any better. The clarity, depth, power and resonance of the audio is so impressive and like I say S2 is not far behind. The vinyl is visually stunning and has clearly not been overplayed.
The iconic cover is in excellent condition with only light wear and whilst the bottom edge on the inner sleeve has split it remains very clean with barely any marking or creasing. This early pressing is known as the 7th variation although it's always struck me as odd as to why it has the earliest A3/B3 matrix. The most important feature on this pressing is that it has the INVERTED FEATHER on S2. All other aspects are correct - no Peter Grant credit on the labels, the publishing credits are correct and 'Hop' is also spelt correctly.

Visual description
The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. There is no dulling of the surface, no groove wear and S1 in particular is stunning! I can only find a small number of very faint hairlines and S2 is also very clean with just a few more faint hairlines congregated in a small area. However, you can only see them when you tilt the vinyl at a certain angle as they are very faint. The run out grooves are super clean and the red / plum labels, with the inverted feather on S2, have only a little spindle wear and have retained their colour perfectly.
Play Grading
The intro on 'Black Dog' with Page 'warming up his guitar' is basically perfect with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks and Plant's opening vocal has no background at all. It continues to play with stunning power and depth through every section with no ticks, clicks, pops or static. The brief quieter 'moments' play with sublime clarity and there are just no negatives. There is no distortion on the top end and you can tell this vinyl has not been overplayed based on the sonic quality. Page's work at the end could not play any better and the long fade out has only a couple of very quiet static ticks. A superb Mint- start to this classic album.
The percussive intro on 'Rock And Roll' is faultless as is the first instrumental section from Page and co. The first vocal passage is equally as strong and this power and definition is kept up throughout. The power is just immense! And of course Bonham and Jones add so much to the overall sound... as they always do! The sonic quality is on another level here and you can so easily hear the piano on the final third. It is often 'hidden' in the background but not here demonstrating just how clean the vinyl is. This is a fantastic Mint version.
The quiet build up intro 'The Battle Of Evermore' plays so clearly with only a handful of mega light dust ticks and one minor static tick and Plant's opening vocal has no intrusion whatsoever. From then onwards it plays with outstanding clarity and there is nothing to detract from the overall 'sound'. A relatively quiet track by Led Zepp standards the audio is so clean and fresh and I picked up only a couple of background ticks that you could easily miss as they are so quiet. Each note is so sharp and precise and the long fade out is again so clean. I will grade this as ranging between Near Mint and Mint I definitely think that is a fair representation of the audio.
The classic 'Stairway To Heaven' plays with stunning quality from the get go. The acoustic intro plays with wonderful clarity and the first verse is nigh on perfect with just one very light tick right at the end, hardly worth a mention! It continues to play so clearly although I would say the third verse has just a minor touch of vocal distortion but I only mention this to be 100% 'complete' with my grading, it really is so minor. The fourth verse plays with great precision as does the next instrumental passage and as Bonham comes in there is no drop in quality. The next two verses play beautifully and the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio here is just incredible. There is hardly any of the static distortion that you so often find during Page's 'strumming' section and then his solo is just STUNNING! Exceptional power and no distortion and then Plant's high octane vocal is just as impressive. The playback is unbelievably clean and again that all points to a vinyl that has been so carefully looked after down the years. This entire section is up there with the best I have ever heard, there are no faults, and the final quiet vocal ends this classic with great clarity - no crackle as is often the case, just a couple of dust ticks. A stunning version which again deserves to grade as Near Mint to Mint but is certainly a lot more of the latter!

The intro on 'Misty Mountain Hop' is 'as new' and Plant's opening vocal is just as good. It continues in the same precise way with very clear audio - the vocals are very high in the mix on this track and often suffer from static distortion I find but that is not the case here. The playback is 'crystal clear' and there is nothing getting in the way of audio. The sonic quality is as it was back in '71 and is as close to Mint as is possible but will grade as Mint- due to a couple of light ticks at the end of the fade out.
'Four Sticks' plays with impeccable quality from the very first note. The intro and opening vocal section are perfect and if you win this LP just listen to the next section where the volume ramps up and Jones' bass is very much in the foreground. Absolutely STUNNING and turn it up to max! The playback is so strong and deep and the sound reverberates around the room so powerfully! It proceeds in the same way and the clarity and depth is so impressive. The 'keyboard' section towards the end is another prime example of the sonic 'landscape' - immense sound again! The only negative is a little crackle on the fade out which is louder right at the end. I will grade the main 'bulk' of the track as Mint but the fade out as VG I think that is fair.
The acoustic intro on 'Going To California' has only four quieter static 'moments' and then Plant's first vocal plays very clearly with no intrusion. It continues to play with great clarity and whilst there are a small number of ticks / couple of light clicks in the middle section but are not that intrusive as they are not loud by any means. Normal service is soon resumed and the remainder of the track plays perfectly. Ex+ overall.
The entire intro on the classic 'When The Levee Breaks' plays with tremendous clarity and power. So often this track is affected by a fair amount of static distortion but this as clean an intro that you could wish for, a superb start. Plant's first vocal is of the same standard and it continues to play with phenomenal quality and.... no intrusion. I have reached the halfway point now and there is still no static distortion / inner groove distortion. Each note is so clean and the mid instrumental is a case in point - incredible clarity once more. Bonham is of course in his element here and each beat resonates so powerfully. If there is any distortion on the final third it is so minimal and totally non-intrusive and you can still turn it up to max without it affecting the audio quality. This is one of the strongest versions of this classic that you are ever likely to hear and Mint- is very much deserved in my opinion.
In summary this very collectable red/plum pressing plays to a superb standard for the vast majority and S1 in particular is stunning! S2 is close that with only minimal interference as stated. The vinyl is very clean with no scratches and that is reflected in the quality of the audio. This level of depth, resonance and warmth on the audio is only found on the red / plum pressings and it is very much in evidence here! A fine addition to any collection.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition overall with only minimal shelf wear and has retained its original shape and structure so well. The only real wear is on the edges which do have some rubbing but even then not an excessive amount. The spine is still strong and with just some wear on the corners and the other corners remain very clean with barely any wear. The opening edge has hardly any handling wear either. The front cover is close to perfect with only very light wear near the bottom edge and the back cover is even better! The inside of the gatefold is in excellent order with just a couple of minor marks near the top of each panel where they have 'stuck' together at some point. A very respectable version of this iconic cover overall and often found in much worse condition than this!
The original lyric inner is super clean with only a couple of small faint marks but as is common does have a large split on the bottom edge. Darn paper! It also has one very small side split but the flipbacks are still firmly in place. By no means perfect but when you first look at it it does look in excellent shape!
