The year was 1969, and the draft was in full force.
The war in Viet Nam was dividing America, and tearing both families and relationships apart.
Although he didn't write the song, Betty Wright's friend and mentor Willie Clarke had the idea of bringing the old Shirelles
tune up to date, with a heart-felt spoken section in the middle, and a vibe that more reflected the times. This was the result.
"Soldier Boy" received a lot of airplay in Miami, but failed to catch on nationally.
Clarke says the record brought up lots of emotions in people, which might have held it back.
Regardless, this is the early, local pressing, NOT distributed by Atlantic. The flip was written by Sandlin & Carr (ex-Hour Glass),
who were playing on many pre-TK sessions at the time.
