First let me say that anyone who's listened to this era (1970) soul jazz knows there's a bit of repetition in the music, which is one of the things AllMusic complains about. It's funk music and the grooves are meant to be repetitious, that's where most of the music's hooks are found. This is a live album recorded in 1970 in Newark NJ which was sort of the unofficial soul jazz capital during the late 60s and early 70s with several live albums made in several clubs throughout Newark.
The band backing Lou you'll find on many many great soul jazz albums on the Prestige label of which they were the house musicians like Motown's legendary Funk Brothers.
The band is Idris Muhammad on drums, Leon Spencer on organ and bass pedals, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Frank Butler on trumpet and the leader Lou Donaldson on alto sax,
I'm not exactly sure where the AllMusic guy came up with the idea that Lou is playing a baritone sax on this date because he definitely isn't playing a baritone. Lou is using his alto with Selmer's sax effects pickup the varitone attached which allowed the sax player to add effects like a guitarist which is what you're hearing here. It's not the best sounding rig but kudos to Donaldson for having the balls to try something different.
The music is anything but boring. In my opinion it's the band that's really cooking. Lou's playing is solid but not near as inspired as his band mates. The high points for me are the first three tracks. The first tune The Scorpion an original has the boys grooving hard out the gates. The 2nd track the well known jazz ballad Laura is treated very beautifully by Lou and in my opinion the varitone effect which sounds like an octaver fits very well. Track three Alligator Boogoloo is in my opinion the stand out track with great extended solos by the sidemen, especially awesome are the drum and guitar solos. This live version blows the original version away that Lou recorded in 1967 with George Benson it's got a slightly faster tempo and that feel good energy usually only found in live recordings cuz face it soul jazz, jazz and funk are music that's made to be played live with an audience to add extra mojo, that's why you'll find that 90% of the greatest jazz albums are live albums recorded before an audience.
I'll close my review by saying if you're a fan of Lou's albums Midnight Creeper, Alligator Boogoloo, Hot Dog or Everything I Play is Funky then you shouldn't hesitate on getting this it's essential to any Lou fan's collection.
