The LP Bon Jovi – Slippery When Wet with catalog number 830 264-1 M-1 is the definitive breakthrough album for the band, a landmark release in 1980s rock music.
Overview and Significance
-
Release Date: August 18, 1986
-
Genre: Glam Metal, Hard Rock, Pop Metal, Arena Rock
-
Producer: Bruce Fairbairn
-
Status: Slippery When Wet was Bon Jovi's third studio album and catapulted the band from a relatively minor hard rock act to global superstars. It is often cited as the album that perfected the radio-friendly pop-metal format.
-
Commercial Success: It was a massive commercial juggernaut, spending eight weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and was the top-selling album of 1987. It has been certified over 12x Platinum in the U.S. (Diamond status in Canada) and has sold over 28 million copies worldwide.
The Hits and Songwriting Formula
The album is famous for spawning three massive, career-defining singles:
-
"You Give Love a Bad Name" (No. 1 hit)
-
"Livin' on a Prayer" (No. 1 hit, now the band's signature anthem)
-
"Wanted Dead or Alive" (Top 10 hit, a Western-inspired acoustic rock track)
The success was due in part to the band's collaboration with professional songwriter Desmond Child, who co-wrote the two No. 1 hits, along with several other tracks. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote over 30 songs for the album before test-auditioning them for local teenagers in New Jersey to select the final tracklist.
