(APACHE.) by (MAITREYA KALI )...... ....(Based upon the tantalizing glimpses that we have, the life story of Satya Sai Maitreya Kali (nee Craig Smith) must be one of the world's greatest unwritten biographies. Of all the musicians who almost made it in the 1960s, he was arguably the most visionary, as Sundazed's 2004 release of the Smith-helmed and Mike Nesmith-produced Penny Arkade demo recordings from 1967 on Not the Freeze convincingly demonstrates. That superb CD, which contains some of the best psychedelic rock ever to come out of Los Angeles, renders this two-disc set slightly redundant. Nonetheless, Apache Inca also contains some fascinating solo work by the singer-guitarist that was evidently taped both before and after the Penny Arkade recordings and will undoubtedly appeal to those with esoteric tastes in music.By 1968, Smith had quit the Arkade to pursue his spiritual muse. Having earned significant royalty money from pop musicians such as Glen Campbell, Andy Williams, and the Monkees recording his songs, it was possible for him to go on extended sojourns around the world in search of whatever enlightenment he hoped to find. Upon his return stateside, he had assumed a new identity, Maitreya Kali, and then self-released the Apache and Inca LPs sometime during the early 1970s. These albums provided collectors with the first opportunity to hear the previously unreleased Penny Arkade tapes as well as other items from Smith's songbook. What they did not provide was straightforward information about the recordings or the performers on them. The cryptic liner notes, bizarre jottings, and photos from Latin America that served as illustrative material offered only tantalizing clues. 1. Ice and Snow 2. Black Swan 3. Color Fantasy 4.
