Description

USA 1972 Mainstream records jazz funk LP on the Mainstream/Red Lion label with unipak style (thin front) gatefold sleeve (MRL 328). Great liner notes on the inside, starts..."Born in Harlem Hospital NYC 1941, Libra with Taurus rising, moon in Aquarius. Scientologist".

BAND: LaMont Johnson, keys, EX-42, cowbell Sal Marquez, trumpet; Charles Owens, ts, ss, fl; Yusef Rahman, tb Mel Lee, ds 1-3; Ray Pounds, ds 4-7 Reggie Johnson, bs, el bs 1-3; Stan Gilbert, bs, el bs 4-7 Pondaza, congas, bongos Art Johnson, gtr 1-3; Mike Deasey, el gtr 4-7.

A REVIEW: LaMont Johnson was under thirty when he produced this record. An excerpt from the original liner notes will explain the really odd sound Johnson gets from his keys:
"Never before has an organ, even the most majestic, offered such true-to-life piano and harpsichord realism; never before have organ voices been complemented by a piano-like sensitivity: Just as on a real piano, the force in your fingers is translated into expressive control of both volume and color.
"In an instrument that has everything, it's no surprise to find these Electone exclusives that are revolutionizing the field: the world's only Touch Vibrato (to transfer the emotion in your fingers with the same effect as a violin) plus split upper and lower conventional types. Add the versatility of a full preset board and toe pistons, four different coupler combinations, upper percussive and wave motion. Then listen to the exciting beat of the auto-rhythm section, unsurpassed tremolo realism from sound-in-motion rotary speakers and decades-ahead Yamaha Natural Sound speakers. "Sound incredible? "It is." Sound dated? It is. Dated to that pre-digital world back almost forty years ago, almost unrememberable now. Johnson is working here with a fairly brash horn and electric instrument ensemble, with some Blue Note-ish arrangements thrown in. It's very New York, the same fertile cauldron of jazz and soul and bugalu and rock that cross-pollinated the very best music of the 1970s.
There are some great horn charts here, and some keyboard moments that will have you sure my LP is severely, severely warped, which it is not. It's supposed to sound like that! They don't make records like this one anymore.
Trivia Note: This Lamont Johnson is not the same person as Eugene Lamont Johnson, bass player for disco/funk act Brainstorm with a solo album entitled Music of the Sun. He is, however, the same Lamont Johnson as played on a half-dozen Jackie McLean Blue Note albums in the late '60s and a handful of small label albums into the 1990s which I have not heard.

SONGS: A1 M'Bassa 7:19 A2 Signifyin' Gemini 7:12 A3 Medusa's Meanderings 4:53 B1 That's Not The Way To Do It, Beverly 8:15 B2 Europa 5:41 B3 Andromeda 5:16 B4 Libra's Longing 5:55

CONDITION: The record is in excellent condition with just a few light marks from the sleeve on it & the cover is VG+ with dented upper left corner, & then the usual corner & edgewear these unipak style sleeve always get in a hurry (very light compared to most).

I DO NOT ACCEPT BEST OFFER & PRICES ARE FIRM ON EVERYTHING I SELL ON EBAY.

GRADING:
I pretty much use the Goldmine & Record Collector magazines standards for grading, I can send you a link for details in depth about record/cover grading. I've been selling records & CD's professionally for over 20 years now & I try to be accurate in my grading (read my feedbacks on that, records are always VISUALLY graded only unless stated).

LP SHIPPING + PACKING & VARIOUS INFO:
I use real coated cardboard LP mailers when I ship vinyl & these are very durable. I usually take the records with the inner sleeves out of the covers (unless factory sealed of course) so they don't split the seams of the cover in shipment. Then I put them in a 2 or 3 mil plastic sleeve & then wrap a plastic bag or two around them to keep them from flopping around in the mailer, this method seems to work best since it adds air & almost works like bubble wrap (keeps the LP's usually under a pound & saves a lot on shipping rates worldwide compared to using cardboard inserts), breakage rate has been way less than 1 in 1000 using this method, if I added cardboard it also would make the weight of it more prone to the corners getting dented in transit if dropped. 10" records & 12" singles count as 1 LP for shipping, single laserdiscs count as 2 LP's for shipping (& I pack 2+ records differently & I have oversized boxes for larger packages...don't worry I've been sending out stuff about 5 days a week for over 20 years now & know exactly what I'm doing over here). I also add plain white inner sleeves so custom innersleeves don't get spit in shipping also (if either company or specialty sleeves came with the record).

All records are BLACK VINYL unless noted & inserts/gatefold covers/posters/custom inner sleeves will be noted in the description if they are included plus promo & cutout marks stated if they are there also. I don't believe in hiding stuff & try to note most everything that should matter to buyers. All 12" vinyl on ebay is automatically listed as 33 1/3 rpm & 7" vinyl as 45 rpm (to save time on listing all this stuff) if you need to confirm speed on a specific item please ask & I can go check.

OTHER INFO:
I tend to run a lot of the same bands/type of music at the same time. Most cleared payments go out within 24 hours. I'm working by myself here so you are only communicating with me & not a bunch of people & I'm at my computer several times a day & rarely miss a day checking emails. So expect quality hands on service. Everything you see on auction & in my store is (physically) here with me (& no middleman shipping ever!).
Most my items I list go on auction first & then if they don't sell to my store within a few days after the auction ends (for usually more than my minimum bid so watch my auctions to get the best prices on most of the items). I try to keep 25-100 auctions going at all times there are well over 3000 items in my ebay store now. I very much welcome my foreign customers, a full 1/2 or more of all my ebay sales go overseas now so I've become quite used to dealing with overseas buyers.
